Madonna and Child with Angels ca. 1455-60 Antonio Rossellino Italian Italian fifteenth-century marble reliefs of the madonna and Child were highly esteemed by New York collectors in the first half of the twentieth century, and many were given to the Museum. Of these, the Altman Madonna by Antonio Rossellino is arguably the finest. The strong composition, subtle carving, and partial gilding distinguish it among Rossellino reliefs in American collections.Florentine sculptors of Antonios generation—including his older brother Bernardo, as well as Desiderio da Settignano and Mino da Fiesole, who trained alongside Antonio in Bernardos workshop—refined and varied the format of this revered and popular subject. For example, the Madonnas three-quarters pose, seated in a throne with her left arm extended across the panel, is very close to the pose of the Virgin in Antonios probably earlier relief in the Morgan Library and Museum, New York, yet the effect is very different.[1 In the Morgan

The Adoration of the Shepherds probably 1561 Marcellus Coffermans Netherlandish A master in the Antwerp painters' guild since 1549, Coffermans was not interested in the Italianate mannerist style of his own time, but took his inspiration primarily from the works of artists active two or three generations before him. His rendition of this subject is decidedly traditional. The arrangement of the crowded scene, with the angels annunciation to the shepherds depicted in the background, ultimately derives from works by Hugo van der Goes and Gerard David. The signature MARCEL.HELMON.FE[CIT in the lower right corner suggests that the painter came from the Brabantine city of Helmond.. Madonna and Child with Saints Jerome and Mary Magdalen. Artist: Neroccio de' Landi (Italian, Siena 1447-1500 Siena). Dimensions: 24 x 17 1/4 in. (61 x 43.8 cm). Date: ca. 1490.A sculptor as well as a painter, Neroccio de' Landi was one of the most accomplished artists of late-fifteenth-century Siena. His work centered on devotional images of the Madonna and Child; this one dates about 1490. The format--with two accompanying saints set behind the Virgin--was conventional in Siena, but Neroccio's lyrical, relief-like treatment of the figures and his emphasis on surface refinement are peculiar to him.The frame is not original to the picture but was designed by the great architectural engineer-sculptor-painter Francesco di Giorgio, with whom Neroccio shared a workshop between 1468 and 1475. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
