The caption for this illustration that dates to around 1865 reads: All the attention of the little fair-haired boy appeared absorbed by a copy-book, in the leaves of which he was arranging some plants and flowers. The scen in is a poor village in Sweden in November in 1719. The boy is Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist, physician, and zoologist. His father was a pastor and is seen here at left reading the bible and commenting , form time to time, on them to his family. To the right is his mother, knitting stockings with wooden needles. The two little girls are learning to knit and imitaing their mother.
