Despite the rain, hundreds of riders participated in the annual Peacekeepers Ride, which supports causes for service members and law enforcement officers. The annual Peacekeepers ride starts at the Illinois National Guard headquarters on Camp Lincoln in Springfield. This year the ride, held on July 17, honored Illinois Army National Guard Col. (ret.) James Smith and Sangamon County Sheriff Department Sgt. Jason Boesdorfer, both of whom died in May. Smith served in the Illinois Army National Guard for 31 years retiring as the ILARNG Chief of Staff in 2008. He then went on to serve as the Illinois Department of Military Affairs Chief of Staff from 2008 until his death on May 11, 2022.

Montgomery en route to his final resting place. Montgomery, 21, of Folcroft, Pennsylvania, was killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor while aboard (BB-37) USS Oklahoma, Dec. 7, 1941. Montgomerys remains were recovered between 1941 and 1944, but were unable to be identified until March 3, 2021.

Pattillo enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces in November 1942. During World War II, both flew with the Eighth Air Forces 352nd Fighter Group, protecting bombers and attacking ground targets. Maj. Boston Navy Week is one of 15 signature events planned across America in 2012. The eight-day event commemorates the Bicentennial of the War of 1812, hosting service members from the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard and coalition ships from around the world.
