In the late thirteenth century, the Mongol ruler of Iran and Iraq, Ghazan Khan, ordered a copy of the Manafi to be translated into Persian. Because this leaf was copied from that volume shortly after the Mongol conquest of Persia, there is a strong Chinese influence in the stylized clouds above the stags and in the treatment of the flowers.

"The Angel Surush Rescues Khusrau Parviz from a Cul-de-sac", Folio 708v from the Shahnama (Book of Kings) of Shah Tahmasp ca. 1530-35 Abu'l Qasim Firdausi Pursued by the potential usurper Bahram Chubina, Shah Khusrau Parviz fled up a narrow gorge. Reaching an impasse, Khusrau prayed to God for help, and instantly the angel Surush appeared and whisked him to safety. The painting is attributed to Muzaffar 'Ali, a leading artist of the younger generation and great-nephew of the renowned painter Bihzad. In keeping with his other compositions, the elements appear to fly apart, with rocks jutting in every direction. His brushwork is somewhat painterly, consisting of layers of pale hues rather than the customary technique of painting with richly saturated colors.. (26.67 x 20.32 cm) (sheet), Ink and colors on paper, Iran, 12th century, The earliest Korans were written almost exclusively in the script known as kufic, after the town of Kufa in Mesopotamia where the style originated. Until the eleventh century, letters were thick and well-rounded, with short vertical and pronounced horizontal strokes. In later examples like this however, letters appear more angular with a stronger emphasis on the vertical elements. This form of kufic eventually gave way to more fluid cursive styles, including thuluth, naskhi and nastaliq, probably the most elegant Persian script. In this example, the rich background of muted arabesques heightens the angularity and strength of the script itself.

Folio from the Davis Album ca. 1604 Abu'l Fazl Written by the courtier Abu'l Fazl between 1589 and 1598, the Akbarnama chronicles the life of the emperor Akbar, including details on His Majestys affairs ranging from the issuing of edicts to his daily diet. The focus of this painting appears to be a royal hunting expedition, but in the lower left corner one finds the true subject: the courtier Hamid Bhakari stripped to his underclothes and forced to ride backwards on a donkey, a humiliation for an offense committed again the emperor. "Jonah and the Whale", Folio from a Majma' al-Tavarikh (Compendium of Histories) of Hafiz-i Abru. Author: Hafiz-i Abru (d. 1430). Dimensions: H. 16 3/4 in. (42.5 cm)W. 13 1/8 in. (33.3 cm). Date: ca. 1425.Written by court historian Hafiz-i Abru and modelled after the Ilkhanid Jami' al-Tavarikh, the text of the Majma al-Tavarikh begins at the time of Adam and continues into the rule of Shah Rukh (r. 1405-47). In this scene, Jonah crouches in the foliage on the bank of a body of water, which was painted in silver and has since oxidized, making it appear dark grey in color. This manuscript, which was originally composed of 407 folios including 150 miniatures, remained intact until at least 1928. It had a leather binding, and its paintings were executed in three different styles. The Metropolitan Museum owns ten folios from the manuscript. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The illustration features Martagon lily (Lilium chalcedonicum) and Wallflower (Cheiranthus cheiri; Matthiola incana; Matthiola tricuspidata). Three varieties of the Wallflower are depicted in red, yellow, and white. The artwork is attributed to Mîrzâ Bâqir and is found on folio 164v. It was created between 1889 and 1890, possibly in Tehran or Mashhad. The dimensions of the top section are 19.5 x 9.8 cm, and the bottom section measures 18.5 x 3.1 cm

Ink, gold, and opaque watercolor on paper; This page contains two quatrainspoems made up of four lines. The diagonally written text in the center of the page is a poem addressed to a ruler, expressing hope for his success and the downfall of his enemies. The second poem is split between the horizontal panels at the top and bottom of the page. This quatrain praises the beauty of the writer’s beloved, saying that “her moonlike face can steal away a hundred besotted hearts.” At the right are calligraphic exercises displaying letters of the alphabet and the virtuoso skill of the calligrapher Sultan Muhammad Khandan, who signed the page in the triangle at the lower left of the inner text block.

"Women Feasting on a Balcony", Folio from the Davis Album late 17th-early 18th century Vivid color and fine brushwork are seen in this scene of leisure. Noblewomen sit on a terrace surrounded by luxurious textiles, objects, and sweetmeats with attendants ready on hand. In some ways the style is somewhat of a throwback to the Jahangir period when such scenes first became popular. However, the figure style and the unresolved architecture indicate that this painting was made in the 18th century when the Mughal style was in an especially romantic phase.. Yahya ibn Mahmod al-Wasiti was a 13th-century Arab Islamic artist. Al-Wasiti was born in Wasit in southern Iraq. He was noted for his illustrations of the Maqam of al-Hariri. Maqama (literally 'assemblies') are an (originally) Arabic literary genre of rhymed prose with intervals of poetry in which rhetorical extravagance is conspicuous. The 10th century author Badi' al-Zaman al-Hamadhani is said to have invented the form, which was extended by al-Hariri of Basra in the next century. Both authors' maqamat center on trickster figures whose wanderings and exploits in speaking to assemblies of the powerful are conveyed by a narrator. Manuscripts of al-Hariri's Maqamat, anecdotes of a roguish wanderer Abu Zayd from Saruj, were frequently illustrated with miniatures.

In the first centuries after the advent of Islam, Arabic calligraphyalluding to the written word of Godwas one of the main characteristics distinguishing the art of Islam from that of the preceding Byzantines and Sasanians in the Near East. In sixteenth-century Iran, calligraphy was a highly revered art form, visible in the public sphere in architectural inscriptions and, in more private and exclusive circles, collected by the court and wealthy elite to be assembled and enjoyed in albums. Samples such as the one shown here were often embellished with stylized floral and leaf patterns rendered in colorful pigments and gilding, remounted into beautifully ornamented and gilded margin papers, and bound together in albums and anthologies of poetry.
