The Shahnameh or Shah-nama ('The Book of Kings') is a long epic poem written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi between c. 977 and 1010 CE and is the national epic of Iran and related Perso-Iranian cultures. Consisting of some 60,000 verses, the Shahnameh tells the mythical and to some extent the historical past of Greater Iran from the creation of the world until the Islamic conquest of Persia in the 7th century.

Bahram V was the fourteenth Sassanid King of Persia (421-438). Also called Bahram Gur or Bahramgur, he was a son of Yazdegerd I (399-421), after whose sudden death (or assassination) he gained the crown against the opposition of the grandees by the help of Mundhir, the Arab dynast of al-Hirah. Bahram Gur is a great favorite in Persian literature and poetry. Numerous legends have been associated with Bahram. One account says that he aided an Indian king in his war against China and that, in return for his help, the Indian king made over the provinces of Makran and Sindh to Persia. The Lurs of Persia, it is argued, are the descendants of musicians sent to Persia by the grateful Indian monarch. However there does not exist any historical proof in support of this story. Other accounts suggest that he married an Indian princess. However, the conclusion of such a marriage alliance is regarded as highly dubious once again due to lack of evidence. Pedanius Dioscorides (Greek: ed sd; circa 40—90 AD) was a Greek physician, pharmacologist and botanist, the author of a 5-volume encyclopedia about herbal medicine and related medicinal substances (a pharmacopeia), that was widely read for well more than a thousand years. A native of Anazarbus, Cilicia, Asia Minor, Dioscorides practiced in Rome at the time of Nero. He was a surgeon with the army of the emperor, so he had the opportunity to travel extensively, seeking medicinal substances (plants and minerals) from all over the Roman and Greek world. "Pair of Serpents", Folio from a Manafi' al-Hayawan (On the Usefulness of Animals) of Ibn Bakhtishu' 1297-99 Ibn Bakhtishu' This folio exemplifies the impact of Chinese art on Iranian painting as a result of the Mongol conquest. The lava-like rock at the right and the tree with its knotty bark and twisted form are adapted from Far Eastern painting as are the limited use of color and pastel shades. However, the flat ground line at the bottom of the picture follows an early Islamic tradition, and the use of red as a background color for areas of darkness, such as the hole in the rock, is also a feature often found in early Persian painting.. On the basis of the tightly wound turban with a thick bulge in front and a fanned end with flowers on a gold ground the painting can be dated to the 1690's or early eighteenth century. A signature would have appeared in the faintly visible cartouche beneath the horse's belly but it has faded into illegibility. The style of the work with the lightly painted villages and mountains in the background recalls works of the 1690s signed by Muhammad Zaman. The bold nasta'liq calligraphy mounted above and below the painting is signed by 'Ali Riza 'Abbasi, the director of the library of Shah 'Abbas (r. 1587-1629). Museu

From a series of paintings valorizing the virility of the ruler, this scene of lovemaking is set in the lavish interior space of the palace womens quarters. Mauve floral carpet, gold lattice window, and vessels for wine and breath-freshening paan enhance the scene. The marble walls with gold flowering plants and niches appear gray in the dim evening light.

Most notable in this illustration are the expressive faces and animated gestures that the players display. The 9th-century historian al-Mas'udi wrote that such 'pleasantry and jests' were customary among chess players in Baghdad at that time.
