A Garden Scene, c. 1725, 6 1/4 x 9 1/4 in. (15.88 x 23.5 cm), Opaque watercolor and gold on paper, India, Deccani, A court lady stands under a canopy in a lavish garden, her servant prostrate beside her. The highly stylized and lyrical poses of the figures suggest that this image was not intended as the depiction of an actual event or persons. Rather, it was likely made to set a mood or stir up certain emotions in the viewer. Sets of paintings like this were known as ragamalas, or 'string of melodies,' and each painting in the set would be associated with a specific tune, mood, or time of day.

(25.4 x 17.6 cm). In the fifteenth or sixteenth century, a new genre of painting developed that attempted to capture the moods of famous passages of classical music in pictorial vignettes. This painting depicts one of the most common scenarios for ragini paintings: a lonely woman passing time while her beloved is away. Dhanashri is not a well-known ragini, but it seems likely that it was a quiet, melancholy piece, much like this image. The womans solitude is here underscored by the presence of a pair of rabbits, animals that are famous for their fertility. Asian Art ca. 1790 or earlier

The farmer, father of the son with the deceitful wife, steals away with her anklet while she is in bed with her lover, from a Tuti-nama (Tales of a Parrot): Eighth Night, c. 1560. Mughal India, court of Akbar (reigned 1556-1605). Gum tempera, ink, and gold on paper; overall: 20.3 x 14 cm (8 x 5 1/2 in.); painting only: 10.4 x 10.1 cm (4 1/8 x 4 in.). The unfaithful wife and her lover were discovered by her father-in-law in their rendezvous place. Thinking she was asleep, he took her anklet as evidence of her infidelity, planning to confront her with it later. The lovers, still in bed, were awakened and witnessed him leaving by the gate, holding her anklet. Under the bed are a pitcher and basin for water, a dish of breath-freshening and mildly narcotic pan leaves, along with bottles of perfumes, all the accoutrements for a romantic encounter.

The Hamzanama recounts the picturesque exploits of Hamza, the uncle of the Prophet Muhammad. The Mughal emperor Akbar (ruled 1556-1605) ordered his artists to prepare an illustrated copy of the Hamzanama on a scale never seen before: 1,400 paintings on sheets of paper backed with cloth. Literary sources record that though more than fifty painters busied themselves with the colossal undertaking, it took fifteen years to complete. Four of the folios are held by the Brooklyn Museum. This painting depicts the demon Arghan bringing a casket of arms to Hamza. Emerging from the water, here rendered by frothy, curling waves, he presents a seemingly ferocious aspect with his spotted skin, flaming eyes, and sharp fangs projecting from a mouth with a rather frozen grimace. Ramkali Ragini: Folio from a ragamala series (Garland of Musical Modes) ca. 1605-06 India (Rajasthan, Bikaner) The texts related to this ragini tell of a vivacious woman anxiously waiting for her lover, who arrives far too late. The written sources build tension by describing her high spirits and excitement at being near her hero as well as her wish to enchant him through her actions and sentiment. Still, she suspects he has been with another woman, which is dramatized by her gesture of rejection and his posture of apology. Akbar and Jahangir Examine a Ghir Falcon while Prince Khusrau Stands Behind, c. 1602-4. Mughal India. Gum tempera and gold on paper; page: 35.8 x 23.4 cm (14 1/8 x 9 3/16 in.). Emperor Akbar sits against a purple bolster under a canopy looking aged and careworn, probably not long before his death. He examines a trained falcon of the type that the Mughals used in hunting. This falcon appears to be from Akbars son, Prince Salim, who stands before him in a gesture of gift-giving. A stately black antelope, a wild animal now a pet, harnessed and wearing a bell, crouches at the foot of the steps leading up to the canopied platform.

Ladies on a Terrace Mughal Style. Ladies on a Terrace, ca. 1700-1710. Opaque watercolor on paper, Sheet: 13 3/4 x 10 1/4 in. (34.9 x 26 cm). Court women were a favorite subject in Indian painting, although few images of upper-class women are actual portrait likenesses. The zenana (women's area of the palace) was the stuff of fantasy for the male artists and patrons of painting: those not privileged to enter the zenana speculated about the delights to be found inside, while the husbandswho were frequently away on military campaignswaxed nostalgic about the happy hours they had spent there. Images of the zenana usually show the denizens whiling away their time in graceful languor, awaiting their husband's return. Solomon and the Queen of Sheba early 19th century This illustrated folio was probably cut from its original illustrated manuscript as a line of text appears along the bottom edge of the leaf. The image depicts a group of female attendants, musicians, and dancers surrounding a crowned central female figure who kneels on a golden throne. A crowned male figure kneels at the lower left. One attendant on the queen's right holds a traditional axe-shaped fan, while the attendant on her left holds a fan in the shape of a sunburst, often a symbol of imperial power. All the female attendants and musicians wear a striped cap which allows us to date the painting to around 1800. "Faramarz Encircled While Battling Bahman", Folio 475r from the Shahnama (Book of Kings) of Shah Tahmasp ca. 1530-35 Abu'l Qasim Firdausi Bahman, the son of Isfandiyar, wished to avenge his fathers death by destroying Zabulistan (Sistan) and the remaining family of Rustam. Faramarz, Rustams son, is shown here valiantly defending his homeland, but in the end he lost the battle, his land, and his life. The artist Aqa Mirak painted in the mature Safavid style, characterized here by large‑scale figures set close to the foreground. This style anticipates that of illustrated manuscripts and single‑figure studies of the 1540s and 50s.. Maharana Amar Singh II with Ladies of the Zenana outside the Picture Hall at Rajnagar ca. 1707-8 Attributed to Stipple Master Indian Rajnagar, not far from Udaipur, had a special importance for Amar Singh II and therefore also for his artists. Around the years 1692-98, the Stipple Master served as painter to Prince Amar Singh (the future Maharana Amar Singh II). In this workas in many others by the Stipple MasterAmar Singh II appears naked to the waist, and the painter’s technique of dots and short strokes is clearly visible on his subject’s torso. The background is largely unpainted, and color accents are employed with great restraint. Devi Enshrined and Holding the Tongue of a Demon, c. 1725. Northwestern India, Rajasthan, Rajput Kingdom of Sirohi; or Northern Deccan, Aurangabad. Gum tempera, gold, and silver on paper; page: 35.6 x 26.7 cm (14 x 10 1/2 in.). This enigmatic painting remains unidentified. Set in a forest teeming with wildlife, a four-armed goddess with three eyes and a crescent moon in her crown shows her dominance over a naked, ashen male figure standing to her left by clutching his tongue. In her right hands, she appears to hold agricultural implements, while in her upper left hand she holds a mace.

"The Man who Discovers the Treasure has it Carried Away by Hired Workmen", Folio from a Kalila wa Dimna second quarter 16th century This manuscript contains seventy-eight paintings and many text folios telling the famous tales of the jackals Kalila and Dimna. Based on the book of ancient Indian animal fables, the Panchatantra written by Vidyapati (Bidpai), the stories spread all over the Middle East where they became wildly popular. This manuscript has a strong flavor of Mamluk Egypt in the figure styles and bold drawings, with hints of Ottoman tulips and Safavid turbans. However, the burnt orange palette and darkly-inked lines have led to an attribution to Sultanate Gujarat where it is suggested this manuscript was copied from an Egyptian original. Its life in India is also attested by a Devanagari inscription at the end, although the rest of the Arabic text is written in a strong, left-leaning naskh-like script.. The Old man and the Youth. Artist: Painting by Riza-yi `Abbasi (Persian, ca. 1565-1635). Calligrapher: Nur al-Din Muhammad Lahiji. Dimensions: 5 in. high 2.12 in. wide (12.7 cm high 5.4 cm wide). Date: second quarter 17th century.Mounted on an album page below a calligraphy signed by Nur al-Din Muhammad Lahiji, these two drawings form a single composition depicting an old man dressed as a dervish pursuing a youth with a wine bottle and cup. Although the drawings are ascribed to Riza-yi 'Abbasi, the quality of line here is more rigid and less sure than that of the master. The image of an old man yearning for a youth finds parallels in Persian mystical poetry.
