In the standing position, the lungs behave like a spring that is held at the top. The aveoli at the bottom are better ventilated than those at the apex as their compliance is better. In a lateral position, the lower lung is better ventilated as it is positioned on a more favourable part of the compliance curve. A GA lowers the residual functional capacity, the lower part of the lung is on a less favourable level of the compliance curve, which increases problems in the ventilation/perfusion ratio.

For the following reasons, adult stem cells may eventually prove to be better for cell therapy than embryonic stem cells: their greater availability in adult tissue, the absence of immune-response rejection, their decreased disposition for tumors. Removed from the patient, stem cells can be cultured and multiplied to attain a quantity that is sufficient to treat sickness or injuries.
