Dido's banquet, Anonymous, c. 1650 - c. 1700 A company is sitting around a table in a room. Servants wear food. One of them pours wine from a jug in the drinking bowl of a harnessed man, sitting in the foreground. It is Achates, the friend of Aeneas, to whom he looks over his shoulder. Aeneas, also in armor, gesturing to the woman next to him, Dido, who has put her left arm around a child. This is Cupido in the form of Aeneas' son Ascanias. Next to Dido are a crown, a scepter and a pearl necklace on a drapery, which partially cover a seat. Plates and saucers are displayed in a buffet against the back wall. Draped curtains hang above it, and oil lamps hang on the ceiling on the left and right. On the far left, a woman plays the harp, back left, some musicians play on a balcony. The Liberation of Oriane from a set of Amadis of Gaul ca. 1590-95 Designed by Karel van Mander I Netherlandish This tapestry depicts scenes from Amadis of Gaul, a chivalric romance that enjoyed great popularity in European court circles in the late sixteenth century. Amadis, a knight from Gaul, has fallen in love with Oriane, daughter of the King of England, but she and the "Damsel of Denmark" have been kidnapped by the king's enemy, Arcalaus. Here we see Oriane's rescue. Toward the center of the scene Amadis encounters the army of Arcalaus and defeats each of his soldiers before finally confronting and killing Arcalaus. In the foreground, Amadis and Oriane are re-united.Woven from a design by Karel van Mander I, the tapestry is a rare example of late sixteenth-century Dutch production. Hans Wertinger was among a group of northern European Renaissance artists who painted landscapes for the backdrops of religious and secular compositions.
