Jean Baptiste Greuze (17251805) was a French genre and portrait painter. His works are characterized as sentimental and moralistic. He was praised by Diderot. Among his best known works are Les Deux Soeurs, La Malediction paternelle, La Cruche Cassee, and LInnocence tenant deux Pigeons. This painting, titled L'Oiseau Mort or The Dead Bird, was bequeated by Baron Arthur de Rothschild to the Louvre. It shgows one of Greuze's most beautifu child figures, a little girl who has just found her bird dead. You forget the nammered pose of the hands and arms, to admire their curves and dimples. The delicacy of the little grieving face is beyond pariase, with the tears starting beneath the downcast lashes, and a mouth that seems to quiver under the stir of shadow that plays with it.

Although inspired by Native American music that he experience firsthand in the American Southwest, Eanger Irving Couse's numerous representations of Indian musician were highly generalized, as was his use of native details. (These figures are dressed in clothing broadly typical of Plains peoples.) His paintings this offered a romanticized, antimodern notion of Native Americansa perspective that appealed to turn-of-the-century white audiences, who were increasingly fascinated with Indian art. Owing in part to the appeal of such images, they traveled in growing numbers to Taos, New Mexico, where Couse spent a portion of each year beginning in 1902. American Art 1905
