Hercules is the Roman equivalent of the Greek divine hero Heracles, son of Jupiter and the mortal Alcmene. In classical mythology, Hercules is famous for his strength and for his numerous far-ranging adventures. He is most famous for a cycle of twelve labors he did while serving his cousin Eurystheus. Prometheus was freed by Heracles (seen here in this 1915 illustration), who was on the eleventh of his twelve labors in search of the Apples of Hesperides. At its inauguration on 31 August 1963, it was hailed as a major telecommunications achievement. This cartoon by Professor H.E. Kohler and published in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung is typical of contemporary press comment. In ancient Greek Mythology, the Greek hero Jason sought the Golden Fleece in Colchis to bring it back to his uncle, Pelias, who had usurped the throne of Ioclus from Jason's father. With the aid of Medea, the daughter of Aeetes, the king of Colchis, Jason snatched the fleece, guarded by a fire-breathing dragon (seen here in this 1915 illustration). Medea fell in love with Jason and left Colchis with him.
