The caption for this illustration reads: Doge courteous pushed the curtain for the entrance to the side. The maiden here is Prince Marko's bride, and one of the court officials is making way for her. In history, Marko was a Serbian king who ruled from 1371 to 1395. The illustration is from a 1921 book on Serbian myths and legends.

Princess Bell-Etoile - The Rescue, Walter Crane - Aladdin

According to Egyptian mythology, Set fooled his brother Osiris into stepping into a coffin. Set then sealed the coffin and threw it into the Nile river. It floated to Byblos (in present-day Lebanon) where it became imbedded in a cedar tree trunk. The cedar tree was cut down and used as a column in the palace. Isis, Osiris' wife, went to the palace and asked permission to take the coffin from the column, which she did, without harming the palace. She then took the coffin back to Egypt to bury it. This illustration, dating to 1915, shows Isis, having taken the coffin from the column, now leaving Byblos for Egypt.

This image, dating to around 1899, shows the Edward of Lancaster, born 1453 and only child of Henry VI, and his mother, Margaret of Anjou, with robber of Hexham who, with his comrades, had captured them This robber helped the two reach France. Edward's birth led to War of Roses. The artist is Frances Brundage, an American who died in 1937.

A rather alarming illustration (at least to any new parents) depicting a baby being spirited away by fairies who leave a 'wizened changeling of their race' in its place while its mother sleeps. Fortunately, a poem below advises a prayer to bless the child before bedtime to avoid any unfortunate occurrence. Date: 1911

Judah', a collection of ballads by the non-Jewish poet Börries von Münchhausen 1874 - 1945. Illustrated by Ephraim Moses Lilien (1874-1925), art nouveau illustrator and printmaker, noted for his art on Jewish themes. He is sometimes called the "first Zionist artist. Münchhausen's relationship to Judaism remained ambivalent: Munchhausen did not consider the "Jewish race" inferior, but merely wanted to prevent a "mixture" with the non-Jewish Germans.

This 1880s illustration accompanied a book on Homer and his epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey. It shows Morning, or rosy-fingered dawn as Homer (fl. c. 700 B.C.) called that time period, rising with her companions in the sky. Homer, throughout the Odyssey and also the Iliad, uses repetitively epithets such as rosy-fingered to modify and enhance nouns. Rosy-fingered, here, is also a metaphor as dawn is not a person and does not have fingers.
