The Game Market 1783 England. Richard Earlom is known for his masterful engravings based on the works of contemporaneous artists and Old Masters. This richly detailed mezzotint closely relates to Frans Snydersís Still Life with Dead Game, Fruits, and Vegetables in a Market (1981.182). The swooping white neck of the dead goose sprawled across the center of the tableóand cutting across the center of the picture planeómimics the similarly dramatic gesture found in Snydersís Still Life, while the bountiful piles of feathers and flesh add exuberance to the scene.. The 1821 Act of Independence formalized the independence that had been declared in 1810 and was signed by many Creole aristocrats, among them Don José María Gómez de Cervantes, whose portrait is on view nearby. New World figures like the Virgin of Guadalupe, who miraculously appeared to the Indian Juan Diego in 1521, and Saint Felipe de Jesús, the first Mexican-born saint, became important nationalist symbols, supporting the idea that the independence of Mexico was divinely ordained. In 1812, the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm, published Children and Household Tales, a collection German fairy tales. This illustration accompanied the tale Two Brothers. This image is from Grimms Eventyr (Grimm's Fairy Tales) by Carl Ewald, published in 1922. The frontispiece has the illustrations by Philip Grot Johann and R. Leinweber. Johann was a well-known German illustrator and did pieces for Goethe, but he considered his pieces for Grimm's tales very important.
