King Solomon and His Court Indian. King Solomon and His Court, 1875-1900. Opaque watercolor and gold on paper, sheet: 19 11/16 x 11 7/8 in. (50.0 x 30.2 cm). As in the Jewish and Christian traditions, Islam promotes the ancient king Solomon as a model ruler, wise and just. This painting celebrates one element of the considerable lore about Solomon that developed outside of orthodox scriptural accounts: the belief that Solomons influence was so great that he was able to rule the kingdoms of animals and angels. Images of Solomons court populated by all manner of creatures, celestial beings, and even demons were very popular in the court of the Ottoman rulers of Turkey; this fantastic painting, from the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, appears to draw on a Turkish prototype. Mahasura Attacks the Devi, Folio from a Dispersed Devi Mahatmya Series Indian. Mahasura Attacks the Devi, Folio from a Dispersed Devi Mahatmya Series, ca. 1770-1780. Opaque watercolor on paper, sheet: 7 7/8 x 11 5/8 in. (20.0 x 29.5 cm). This painting comes from a series illustrating the Devi Mahatmya, a text celebrating the deeds of the goddess Durga. In Hindu tradition, the greatest warrior deities are goddesses. Some of the warrior goddesses are beautiful, and others are hideous and frightening, but all are very strong and celibate. The goddess Durga was created specifically for the purpose of fighting demons; each of the male gods gave her one aspect of his power. She is usually shown with multiple armseach of them holding a weapon donated by a male godriding on a ferocious lion or tiger. She is lovely, but she uses her beauty to disarm her demon enemies, some of whom become smitten with her. This painting shows a pivotal battle between Durga and a powerful demon named Mahasura.

A hand-drawn, hand-coloured watercolour from the late 19th century by an unknown Burmese artist. The name of the ethnic group featured appears near the top of the picture in Shan script (left), Burmese script (Centre) and Khun script (right). Khun script was formerly used in Kengtung / Kyaingtong in eastern Shan State and in Lan Na or Lanna, northern Thailand. The Lahu are an ethnic minority hilltribe that is indigenous to Thailand, Burma, Laos, Vietnam and China's Yunnan Province with a total population estimated to be about 750,000. The Lahu divide themselves into a number of subgroups, such as the Lahu Na (Black Lahu), Lahu Nyi (Red Lahu), Lahu Hpu (White Lahu), Lahu Shi (Yellow Lahu) and the Lahu Shehleh. Where a subgroup name refers to a color, it refers to the traditional color of their dress.

Shri Shri Jagannatha (Krishna as the Lord of the World) ca. 1890 India, West Bengal, Calcutta The Jagannatha triad is central to major Krishna cult centered on the pilgrimage city of Puri, in Odisha, eastern India. As seen here, Krishna, together with his elder brother Balarama and sister Subhadra, assume the doll-like forms of totemic idols that can be traced to tribal Odisha. The divine triad here has the brothers protectively flanking their sister, the dark complexion Krishna right and the fair Balarama left, -rather than with Jagannatha center-stage, as he is normally displayed to devotees during pujas and the great annual chariot (ratha) procession. The triad stand on a raised hexagonal dais, set within a pillared archway with drawn curtaining, reminiscent of a Victorian photography studio set. An assembly of Brahmanical deities sit reverently below on lotus cushions, notably Brahma, Vishnu, Garuda (on a fluted pillar) and two forms of ascetic Shiva. This print was produced in Cal

Battle of Karbala Abbas Al-Musavi. Battle of Karbala, late 19th-early 20th century. Oil on canvas, 69 1/16 × 134 1/2 × 2 1/4 in. (175.4 × 341.6 × 5.7 cm). This painting commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Husayn, the grandson of the prophet Muhammad and the third imam, or leader, of the Shica Muslims. Husayn was killed by the forces of the Umayyad caliph Yazid I (r. 680-683) in the desert of Karbala in central Iraq in 680 c.e. This battle emphasizes the divide between the Sunni and Shica branches of Islam; Husayn led a resistance against what the Shica Muslims believed was the Umayyads illegitimate rule. The focus of this painting is Husayns half brother, cAbbas, mounted on a white horse as he stabs a member of Yazids army. Individual episodes related to the agonies suffered by Husayn and his companions leading up to and during the battle are illustrated in smaller-scale vignettes on the left. The hereafter is shown at the right, with Husayn and his companions in heaven above and th
