The Three Fates - This painting, titled "A Golden Thread," shows the Three Greek Fates. It was painted by British artist Jonathan M. Strudwick and first exhibited in 1885. It is housed in the National (Tate) Gallery of British Art in London. According to Greek, and later Roman mythology, the three fates determined the life span, represented by a thread, of each individual. Clotho (left) - young woman spun the thread, Lachesis (right - middle-age woman) measured it, and Atopos (middle- old woman) cut it.

Death of Icarus. Engraving from 'Tableaux du temple des muses' (1655) by Michel de Marolles (1600 - 1681), known as the abbé de Marolles; a French churchman and translator. In Greek mythology, Daedalus was shut up in a tower to prevent his knowledge of his Labyrinth from spreading. Since Minos controlled the land and sea routes, Daedalus set to work to fabricate wings for himself and his young son Icarus. When both were prepared for flight, Daedalus warned Icarus not to fly too high, because the heat of the sun would melt the wax, nor too low, because the sea foam would soak the feathers. They had passed Samos, Delos and Lebynthos by the time the boy, forgetting himself, began to soar upward toward the sun. The blazing sun softened the wax that held the feathers together and they came off. Icarus quickly fell in the sea and drowned.

The eleventh-century novel The Tale of Genji was a favorite subject for many Japanese artists, offering a chance to depict emotional stories in an idealized, antique setting. This painting illustrates an episode that takes place during cherry blossom season, as indicated by white flowers on some of the surrounding trees. The protagonist, Prince Genji, accosts a woman late at night, assuming that she will gladly have sex with him. He later discovers that she is the daughter of a rival. He is shown placing his hand on her shoulder—a gesture that would have been read as blatantly sexual and aggressive during this period, when men and women were rarely depicted touching. In the foreground on the country people and animals that have not survived the large amount of rain. Fine lines that suggest the rain cover almost the entire print except the corner upper left where a pigeon flies with an olive branch in the beak and eat a raven from a dead animal on the land.

The Submersion of Pharaoh's Army in the Red Sea, 1514-15, printed 1549. Titian (Italian, c. 1488-1576). Woodcut; unframed: 41.5 x 55.2 cm (16 5/16 x 21 3/4 in.). Because woodcuts emulate the artist's drawing style, prints after Titian's designs are very different from those of the German master Albrecht Dürer. Whereas Dürer's woodcuts exemplify controlcrosshatching and parallel lines of shading are precise and uniformTitian's lines in the Venetian manner are drawn with vigorous strokes that are bold, expressive, and irregular. An enormous, complex design, The Submersion of Pharaoh's Army in the Red Sea reflects the strength of Titian's drawing, which propels the narrative across several woodblocks to achieve a remarkable unity. The rolling clouds and turbulent sea culminate in the solid gravity of the magnificent cliff that overhangs the shore. Only a fragment exists from the first edition published in 1515, so the print is known solely in examples from the second edition of 1549. P
