This series of paintings predominantly tells the Old Testament story of Abraham and Isaac, and each of the canvases treats the interaction of humans and angels. In three works, angels appear to Abraham and, in one particularly dramatic canvas, an angel intercepts Abraham before he sacrifices his own son. Like another work in this series, Tobias and the Angels, the Sacrifice of Isaac is a narrative about fathers and sons as well as obedience inspired by faith.

Allegory of Lyric Poetry 1753 François Boucher French By the 1750s, Boucher was associated with a number of signature motifs, perhaps none more so than allegorical putti suspended midair. When given attributes alluding to a season, element, or one of the arts, they provided flexible decorative programs. Frequently Boucher himself participated only minimally in the production of these decorative canvases, allowing his workshop to execute the painting on his behalf. Nonetheless, as here, he sometimes signed such works. Unusual shapes known as chantourné, or cutout, formats allowed these paintings to function apiece with the Rococo carving of the surrounding panels.. Allegory of Lyric Poetry 435741

Although the overall spirit of the work is Bolognese and reminiscent of Ludovico Carracci (1555-1619), the loose handling, especially in the saint's head, indicates a date of execution in the late 17th century or early 18th century.

He invites his wife to engage in a dalliance in the garden and creates, thereby, an alibi. The story comes from Jean de La Fontaines Fables, which enjoyed enormous success in eighteenth-century France.
