The Penitent Magdalen. Artist: Corrado Giaquinto (Italian, Molfetta 1703-1766 Naples). Dimensions: 63 x 46 1/2 in. (160 x 118.1 cm). Date: ca. 1750.According to the <i>Golden Legend</i>, Mary Magdalen ended her life in a cave near Marseilles where she was visited daily by angels, their songs her only nourishment. Giaquinto shows her dressed as penitent (around her chest she wears a cilice, or penitential hairshirt), her gaze focused on the gesturing angel and the crown of thorns displayed by a cherub. The picture was painted for Cardinal Mario Bolognetti (1690-1756) in Rome. Giaquinto was the foremost decorative fresco painter in Italy after Tiepolo, but this moving work shows him no less a master of religious painting. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Date: 1740.Natoire was trained in the studio of François Le Moyne (1688-1737). He won the Prix de Rome and studied in Italy. This picture must have been intended by the younger artist as a tribute to his teacher. It is a pendant to a painting by Le Moyne depicting Adam receiving the forbidden fruit from Eve in the Garden of Eden (private collection). Natoire shared with Le Moyne a predilection for the nude, here depicting with care the rosy and sensual body of the disappointed Eve, a tear glistening on her cheek. The vast canvases celebrate the Stuart monarchy and the reign of Charless father, King James VI of Scotland, who became James I of England and Ireland in 1603, succeeding Queen Elizabeth I. This oil sketch represents Charles as a child, a young prince embodying the union. Crowning him are three women: personifications of England (in red) and Scotland (in yellow) and the Roman goddess of wisdom and war, Minerva. Above them, two cherubs hold the royal coat of arms.

Vertumnus and Pomona. In his Metamorphoses the Roman poet Ovid writes about Vertumnus, the god of seasons who fell in love with Pomona, a ravishing nymph who cared for fruit and orchards. She wanted nothing to do with him, however, and was interested only in her garden. In the guise of an old woman, Vertumnus nevertheless won Pomona over by pointing out that as grape vines need the elm, so does one need a partner.
