Designs for Terms ca. 1543-45 Jean Mignon French In 1544 Hugues Sambin was at Fontainebleau, where a group of artists active as printmakers was making creative designs emerging from the court available to a wider audience through etchings. There is no evidence that Sambin was involved with this project, but he likely owned some of their etchings and was inspired by their endeavors. These designs for terms, etched by Mignon, one of the most creative and prolific etchers of ornament in the group, might have appealed to him in particular. Pierre Sonnerat (1748-1814) was a French naturalist and explorer who made several voyages to southeast Asia between 1769 and 1781. He published this two-volume account of his voyage of 1774-81 in 1782. Volume 1 deals exclusively with India, whose culture Sonnerat very much admired, and is especially noteworthy for its extended discussion of religion in India, Hinduism in particular. The book is illustrated with engravings based on Sonnerat's drawings. Among the most interesting illustrations are Sonnerat's pictures of various Hindu deities.

This illustration dates to around 1898 and shows Anou or Dagon from a relief at Nimroud (also spelled Nimrod). Dagon is an ancient Mesopotamian deity, often associated with fertility and agriculture. The fish seen here with him was known as dag, hence the reason for his name. Nimroud (also spelled Nimrod) is the Assyrian name for the city of Kalhu on the Nineveh plains. Nimroud is located south of present-day Mosul in Iraq. Anou (also spelled Anu) was the ancient Mesopotmaian god of the sky. Anou was originally the supreme deity of the Babylonian pantheon.

It describes his experiences some years earlier on the South Asian island now best known as Sri Lanka and provides one of the most important contemporary accounts of 17th century Ceylonese life. Knox spent 19 years on Ceylon after being taken prisoner by King Rajasimha II.

Imbued with the sinuous linear style of Tooropís most celebrated works, this small drawing merges medieval subject matter with the graphic language of Symbolism. Cleverly situated within the voids of a capital letter E, Tooropís title figure recalls the conventions of medieval manuscript illumination. Indeed, like many of Tooropís drawings, this work was likely intended for inclusion in a book. The swirling parallel lines in the saintís hair and the intensity of her downcast posture assert the sympathetic interpretation Toorop offered of this warrior saint, whose canonization was not finalized until 1920.. Albrecht Dürer revolutionized the techniques of woodcut and engraving, and was the first artist to achieve fame through his work as a printmaker. In 1512 the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, who recognized how useful the new medium of printmaking would be for spreading his fame and burnishing his image, commissioned Dürer to create in his honor a gigantic, multipart woodcut inspired by imperial processions of antiquity.
