Diana Bathing 1578-1660 Francesco Albani Italian This drawing was reproduced in reverse by the French engraver Bernard Picart (1673-1733) as the work of Domenichino when it figured in his 1734 book of reproductive prints from the "cabinet de Mr. Uilenbroek." At Chatsworth there is a related drawing, also traditionally attributed to Domenichino, in which the nude Diana is represented seated (inv. 507). The Chatsworth drawing comes from the Dutch collection of Nicolaes Anthoni Flink (1646-172; Lugt 959), and thus, like our drawing, it was in Amsterdam in the early eighteenth century. Both these drawings would seem to be the work of Albani, an attribution strongly endorsed by Ann Sutherland Harris (see Sutherland Harris 1969 and 1996). The rather dry pen work and the somewhat mannered elongation of the figures are paralleled in a Death of Adonis’ in the British Museum, London, a drawing traditionally attributed to Albani (inv. 1895,0915.697). Allegory of America ca. 1587-89 Jan van der Straet, called Stradanus Netherlandish This drawing is preparatory for the first engraved plate in the series Nova Reperta, or New Inventions of Modern Times. The series was designed by the Medici court artist Johannes Stradanus (Giovanni Stradano), and is dedicated to the Florentine statesman, poet and scholar, Luigi Alamanni, with whom he often collaborated. Stradanus also created allegorical paintings, ephemera and cartography as Medici propaganda. Even though the Medici were not involved in the colonization of the Americas, and they themselves were subsumed under the sovereignty of Spain, Grand Duke Ferdinando sought to strengthen cultural and economic ties with the New World during his reign (1587-1609).The drawing shows the Florentine explorer Amerigo Vespucci as he first encounters the Americas. Hermes Orders Calypso to Release Odysseus. De Lairesse was well versed in the classics. Here he portrayed a story in Homers Odyssey, the epic poem about Odysseus wanderings after the fall of Troy. During his journey the Greek hero lands on Ogygia, the island ruled by the goddess Calypso. She falls in love with him, and detains him for seven years. Ultimately the Olympian gods prevail upon her, through their messenger Hermes, to release Odysseus.
