Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae: Atreus Farnese 1574 Anonymous This print comes from the museums copy of the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae (The Mirror of Roman Magnificence) The Speculum found its origin in the publishing endeavors of Antonio Salamanca and Antonio Lafreri. During their Roman publishing careers, the two foreign publishers - who worked together between 1553 and 1563 - initiated the production of prints recording art works, architecture and city views related to Antique and Modern Rome. The prints could be bought individually by tourists and collectors, but were also purchased in larger groups which were often bound together in an album. In 1573, Lafreri commissioned a title page for this purpose, which is where the title ‘Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae first appears. Lafreri envisioned an ideal arrangement of the prints in 7 different categories, but during his lifetime, never appears to have offered one standard, bound set of prints. Hercules Killing Cacus Made 1588 Netherlands. To make a chiaroscuro woodcut, an artist uses a separate woodblock for printing each different color of ink. Often, as was the case for both of these prints, the image was rendered primarily in a line block, usually in black. The additional colorsótogether with the color of the paper itselfóprovide more definition to the forms and more dramatic light effects.The virtuoso graphic artist Hendrick Goltzius used the chiaroscuro woodcut technique to great effect in his depiction of Hercules completing the 10th of his 12 labors the capture of the cattle of Geryon. To accomplish this feat, he had to vanquish the giant Cacus. The Brook Edward Calvert (Appledore, Devon, England, 1799 - 1883) 1829 An engraver and painter of landscapes and mythological scenes, Edward Calvert was born in Appledore in Devon. After a spell in the Navy, Calvert studied art at Plymouth, where he studied under James Ball and Ambrose Johns, a highly regarded local landscape painter. He then moved to London, studying at the Royal Academy Schools and meeting William Blake, under whose influence he quickly fell. His early visionary work was greatly inspired by Blake and he became a member of the Blake-influenced group known as 'The Ancients', which met at Samuel Palmer's home in Shoreham, Kent. He was a skilled wood engraver and today his woodcuts, such as "The Brook", are better known than his paintings. Brook, Female

Lazio Viterbo Bagnaia Villa Lante097. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.
