François-Nicolas Chifflart was an important member of the etching revival in 19th-century France. This print, from his 1865 series Improvisations on Copper, reveals the freedom and experimentation that Chifflart found in this medium. He drew directly on prepared copper plates, sketching as he would on a sheet of paper, to create both anecdotal studies and imaginative finished compositions. Amphion and Zethus Delivering their Mother Antiope from the Fury of Dirce and Lycus 1789 England. A British sculptor and draughtsman who created figural designs for famed ceramicist Josiah Wedgwood, John Flaxman had a taste for the Neoclassical, which led him to Rome in 1787. While in the Eternal City, Flaxman produced this study for a nine-by-five-foot bas-relief using several references from ancient Roman sculpture. The drawing exhibits Flaxmanís signature elegance in figural outlines. However, Flaxman felt the project was inadequate to establish his reputation as a sculptor, so he abandoned it and later reused two of the figures from this drawing in a different context.. Nymph Riding on a Satyr's Back, from Bacchanales, or Satyrs' Games 1763 France. This set of four etchings may refer to ancient bas-reliefs Fragonard saw while visiting Rome with an important antiquarian, the AbbÈ de Saint Non (see 1926.453ñ55). Indeed, the artistís design for Nymph Riding on a Satyrís Back directly derives from a sculpture (now lost) that he saw in the Villa Mattei. The size of the paired oval and rectangular reliefsóone or more of which might derive from ancient engraved cameos instead of large-scale sculpturesóremains ambiguous, although hidden objects in the surrounding foliage suggest a large scale.
