The women in this portrait were Bessie (left) and Clara Stillman, the sisters of the powerful financier James Stillman. Abbott Handerson Thayers biographer, Nelson C. White, recorded an anecdote about his own experience of viewing this painting at an exhibition in 1922: “I was looking at the picture when two elderly women came and stood before it. As I glanced from the canvas to their faces I suddenly realized that they were the subjects of the portrait. Thayer had rendered their character in their youth with such insight and feeling that the likenesses survived the modulations of age and easily identified them.” American Art 1884

In these two paintings, Abigail Pickman and Elizabeth Goldthwaite sat for their marriage portraits. As was typical of upper-class white women in the colonial United States, they likely did not control how they were represented in these images, which were intended to project the familys stability and wealth. Before the American Revolution, the Boston painter John Singleton Copley was the most sought-after artist in the country. Copleys portraits, highly regarded for their skillful rendering of luxurious items such as silks and pearls, were synonymous with the tastes of the eighteenth-century social elite, both in the United States and England. Frances Stuart, Duchess of Richmond Jacob Huysmans (Flemish, ca. 1630-1696). Frances Stuart, Duchess of Richmond, mid 1660's. Oil on canvas, 77 3/4 × 46 3/8 in., 161 lb. (197.5 × 117.8 cm). In this work, court painter Jacob Huysmans depicted Frances Stuart as Minerva, the goddess of intellect, military victory, and the arts, and a daughter of Jupiter. She sports the Roman goddesss attributes: spear and armor, including a helmet and shield adorned with the head of Medusa. Minerva was also associated with chastity, and so the choice to represent Stuart in this guise might have been understood in the context of sexual intrigues at the seventeenth-century court of King Charles II of England. The king was infatuated with Stuart and, although he chose her as the model for Britannia, the female personification of Great Britain, she is thought not to have succumbed to his advances. Eva Braun's Photo Albums, ca. 1913 - ca. 1944. These albums are attributed to Eva Braun (four are claimed by her friend Herta Schneider, nee Ostermeyer) and document her life from ca. 1913 to 1944. There are many photographs of Eva, her sisters and their children, Herta Schneider and her children, as well as photographs of Eva's vacations, family members and friends. Included also are photographs taken by and of Eva Braun at Hitler's chalet Berghof (or Kehlstein), photographs of Hitler and his entourage, visitors to Berghof and the scenery around Berchtesgaden, and some studio portraits of Eva and members of her family.

Yoroi Ferry, Koami-cho (Yoroi no Watashi Koami-cho), No. 46 from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, 10th month of 1857. Woodblock print, 14 1/4 x 9 1/4in. (36.2 x 23.5cm). The Yoroi Ferry, which we see in the distance loaded with a standing crowd, transported passengers across the Nihonbashi River. It owed its name to Minamoto Yoshiie (1041-1108), the medieval warrior who was said to have hung his armor on the pine tree in number 26. Here, so the legend goes, he pacified the waves during a great storm by sacrificing his armor to the angry Dragon King of the sea. Behind the ferry are the warehouses of Koami-chō, which stored rice, soy, and oil for the capital. Asian Art 10th month of 1857

The figure pictured here, according to Greek mythology, is Eurus, or Euros, the god of the east wind. The folds of his clothes suggested heavy clouds. The others are: Lips, or Livos, the god of the southwest wind. Usually he was shown holding a ship's sternpost because when the wind blew form the southwest into Athens' port harbor of Piraeus, ships could not sail. Zephyrus was the god of the west wind.
