Venus and Adonis. Artist: Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) (Italian, Pieve di Cadore ca. 1485/90-1576 Venice). Dimensions: 42 x 52 1/2 in. (106.7 x 133.4 cm). Date: 1560s.Tales from Ovid's <i>Metamorphoses</i> inspired Titian to paint what he called <i>poesie</i>, or poetry in paint. Here, Venus tries to stop her lover from departing for the hunt, fearing--correctly--that he would be killed. The mood of sensuality, conveyed by the beautiful depiction of Venus from the back, enhances the viewer's sense of the tragic end to this story, expressed through their exchanged glances and the frightened Cupid. Titian's workshop made multiple versions of this composition, but this one is of exceptional quality and was painted by Titian himself. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Venus and Adonis probably mid-1630s Peter Paul Rubens Flemish Rubens took the subject of this painting from the Roman poet Ovids Metamorphoses (completed A.D. 8). Accidently pricked by one of Cupids arrows, Venus fell in love with the handsome hunter Adonis. With cavalier indifference to the goddesss charms and her warnings of danger, Adonis hunted a wild boar and was gored to death. Rubens shows their leave-taking—a popular subject also famously depicted by Titian in another picture now at The Met. Technical examination indicates that a later hand altered Adoniss expression to make it less foreboding.. Venus and Adonis 437535

Rubens shows their leave-taking--a Renaissance embellishment famously depicted by Titian (see his canvas in Gallery 607). With manly indifference to the goddess's charms and her warnings of danger, Adonis hunted a wild boar and was gored to death. Partly to please the religious faction at court, she commissioned devotional pictures for the chapels in her various residences. She ordered this one of Saint John, her patron saint, for a chapel in the Capuchin Convent in Paris, where she had an apartment and went for periodic retreats.

Moses Striking the Rock. Artist: Abraham Bloemaert (Netherlandish, Gorinchem 1566-1651 Utrecht). Dimensions: 31 3/8 x 42 1/2 in. (79.7 x 108 cm). Date: 1596.Bloemaert worked in Utrecht and taught many of the leading artists of that city during the course of his long career. This painting is characteristic of the mannerist style which he adopted in the last decade of the sixteenth century. In the middle ground at the left Moses strikes the rock to provide water for the Israelites in the desert. The subject is an Old Testament prototype for salvation through baptism, and the woman with a jug may embody the saving properties of water. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Eve with Cain and Abel 1520s Bachiacca (Francesco d'Ubertino Verdi) Italian The picture, which dates from the 1520s, has been cut down at the left and originally included a seated figure of Adam. The whole composition is known from another version painted by Bachiacca in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
