This etching shows the influence of the Baroque artist Johann Lys. The fine network of lines used by Fragonard, however, reflects his own exquisite drawing style rather than the blustery brushstrokes found in oil paintings such as Lysí s.. Mythological Scene, possibly Diana Seducing Callisto ca. 1764 Jean Honoré Fragonard French This etching is from a group of sixteen made by Fragonard in Paris around 1763-64, based on black chalk drawings he had made in Italy a few years earlier for his friend and patron, the abbé de Saint-Non. Of the sixteen, ten were based on Venetian models, including this print inspired by a painting by the seventeenth-century artist Pietro Liberi (Italian, 1605/14-1687). Liberi's canvas, today in the Royal Collection Trust (RCIN 405705) is more closely cropped; Fragonard added space above and below the figures to create a more airy composition.. Saint Paul of Thebes tempted by a demon, after Magnasco ca. 1720-30 Bartolommeo Gazalis Born around 227 in the Thebaid region of Egypt, Paul of Thebes is regarded as the first Christian hermit. Here he is shown partly naked, meditating on a cross, and seated outdoors, emphasizing his poverty and commitment to spiritual life. The skull in the lower left corner is a reminder of the transience of earthly existence. In the upper section, a demon in the guise of a sensuous woman attempts to distract him from his devotion. The saints elon-gated figure and the loose and dense style of etching reflect his familiarity with the prints of Giovanni Bene-detto CastiglioneGazalis made only two etchings, both based on designs by Magnasco.
