Mantle ("The Paracas Textile") Nasca. Mantle ("The Paracas Textile"), 100-300 C.E. Cotton, camelid fiber, 24 5/8 × 58 11/16 in. (62.5 × 149 cm). This extraordinarily complex mantle, or cloak, is one of the most renowned Andean textiles in the world. It was most likely used as a ceremonial object. The ninety figures decorating the border, created by needle knitting, have been interpreted as a microcosm of life on Perus South Coast two thousand years ago, with a particular focus on agriculture. Many of the images illustrate native flora and fauna as well as cultivated plants. Costumed figures may represent humans impersonating gods and acting as intermediaries between the real and supernatural worlds. Severed human trophy heads are shown as germinating seeds, suggesting the practice of ritual sacrifice and the interconnected cycles of birth and death. The scene here shows an ancient Etruscan shoemaker's shop and is from a vase painting found at Orvieto. It is black-figure style, painted on a vase. In the center is a table. A lady stands on it on a piece of leather on a block. To the left the shoemaker is cutting the leather in the shape of her sole with a half-moon knife. To the left an apprentice is busily engaged sewing a sandal. Behind him am elderly man, father perhaps of the girl, is speaking to the cobbler. Under the table a sandal and a large bowl of water (for moistening the leather perhaps) are visible. On the wall above hand a rack of awls with pincers and cutter, a piece of leather, a strap, a pair of lasts, a piece of leather, and a basket. What the lady is holding is difficult to say, perhaps a flute case. After the fashion of painting at the time, the lady's flesh is white and that of the men is black. The book dates to 1895.

The first-century B.C. Roman poet Virgil wrote in his epic poem The Aeneid that the "winged Iris, sitting on a cloud in front of a rainbow, appears to Turnus on the steps of the palace." In Greek mythology (Roman as well, Iris was honored as the goddess of the rainbow. In the tale of th Trojan War, Hera (Juno to the Romans), the queen of the gods and a deity who favored the Greeks over the Trojans, sends Iris to tell Turnus, chief of the Rutuli in Italy and the chief enemy of Aeneas once he arrives in Italy, to attack Aeneas and his band of Trojans, and that the timing is good as Aeneas has left the camp to find King Evander. This illustration, dating to around 1900, shows Iris carrying the message to Turnus.
