(16.3 x 11.7 cm) (plate), Etching, The Netherlands, 17th century, Rembrandt's insistent realism displeased seventeenth-century critics, who preferred classical nudes and the soft, fleshy bodies of Peter Paul Rubens. One critic snipped that Rembrandt chose as his models 'a peat stamper or washergirl from the barn.' Brilliantly, he lit his naturalistic Adam and Eve from behind, with reflected light from the distant Eden, where an elephant ambles along, unaware of the scowling pair. The devil is borrowed from an Albrecht Dürer engraving; Rembrandt had acquired a large group of Dürer prints at auction the same year he made this etching.

Dimensions: Sheet: 12 7/8 × 8 1/4 in. (32.7 × 21 cm). Date: ca. 1720-30.Born around 227 in the Thebaid region of Egypt, Paul of Thebes is regarded as the first Christian hermit. Here he is shown partly naked, meditating on a cross, and seated outdoors, emphasizing his poverty and commitment to spiritual life. The skull in the lower left corner is a reminder of the transience of earthly existence. In the upper section, a demon in the guise of a sensuous woman attempts to distract him from his devotion. The saint's elon-gated figure and the loose and dense style of etching reflect his familiarity with the prints of Giovanni Bene-detto CastiglioneGazalis made only two etchings, both based on designs by Magnasco. The only other known impression of this print is the Civica Raccolta Bertarelli in Milan.

Satyr Trying to Wake Silenus with a Grapevine 1535-1545 Italy. The dangers of overindulging become comically clear in Giorgio Ghisiís lively engraving. SilenusóBacchusís lustful, frequently inebriated companionóappears in a wine-induced stupor, empty pitcher in hand. The attendant teasingly trying to wake Silenus with a bunch of grapes (instead of more wine) may be a reference to the hangover relief now known as the hair of the dog, or in this case, the hair of the goat.
