This scene is one of several designs that the English sculptor and draughtsman John Flaxman (1755-1826) did to illustrate passages from the Greek epic poet Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, a commission he had been given by Georgiana Hare-Naylor while he was living in Rome. It represents Andromache fainting on walls of Troy. It was done 1793.

As the Greeks conquer and destroy Troy, Aeneas who has been fighting for Troy turns to home, as he remembers his elderly father Anchises is there. on the way, He sees Helen and is about to kill her, as seen here in this 19th-century illustration, but his mother, Venus (Aphrodite), intervenes and stops him (as sen here as well). She tells him that it is not Helen to blame for the war but the gods who set all in motion.

House of the Centenary, was the house of a wealthy resident of Pompeii, preserved by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The house was discovered in 1879. Built in the mid-2nd century BC, it is among the largest houses in the city. Among the varied paintings preserved in the House are explicit erotic scenes in a room that may have been designed as a private 'sex club'.

Young Spartan Girls Challenging Boys 1855-1865 France. In 1859 Edgar Degas returned to Paris following a prolonged stay in Italy, where he visited relatives in Naples and Florence and attended life classes at the AcadÈmie FranÁaise in Rome. This picture, undertaken around 1860, speaks to his ambition to realize canvases featuring scenes from the Bible, as well as ancient and more recent history. Degas took his subject from the life of Lycurgus, a legendary ninth-century b.c. Spartan lawgiver. Lycurgusís social reforms included an unusual method of physical training in which adolescent girls competed on an equal footing with boys, exercising nude in public. Degas would have worked up this monochromatic sketch with layers of color had he completed it, but he left it unfinished when he began a second version of the subject (National Gallery of Art, London)..
