The great Trojan War, fought between the Greeks and the Trojans, is believed to have been fought around 1184 B.C. Among the great Greek heroes were Odysseus (also known as Ulysses) and Diomedes. Fighting for the Trojans was Rhesus, king of Thrace. The two epics by the Greek bard Homer (fl. c. 700 B.C.), the Iliad, and the Odyssey, center on the war and the journey of Odysseus back home to Ithaca. This scene, based on English sculptor and draughtsman John Flaxman's designs, depicts the scene in Book X of the Iliad when Odysseus and Diomedes steal the horses of Rhesus in a night raid on the Thracian's camp.

In the Roman epic poem, Aeneid, by Virgil, Nisus and Euryalus are two very good friends. They escape burning Troy with Aeneas and travel with him to Italy. When Aeneas goes in search of In Book 9, they enter the enemy camp of the Latins at night. They slaughter many Latins, but as they leave and are on their way back to their camp, the Latin helmet that Euryalus took glistens, attracting the attention of Latins. Nisus manages to escape, but Euryalus is captured. Nisus returns to save his friend, both die as a result. In this illustration that dates to around 1900, the mother of Euryalus, who had made the journey from Troy to Italy with her son, receives news of his death.

It represents Minerva repressing the fury of Achilles. It was done 1793.
