The Temptation of Saint Jerome 1541-1548 Italy. Best known for his Lives of the Artists, a monumental compendium of biographies, Giorgio Vasari was a successful architect and a prolific painter for the Medici dukes of Florence. As a learned artist, he imparted an allegorical element to this frequently depicted episode from the life of Saint Jerome. The saintóa scholar, translator of the Bible, and advocate of monasticismóvividly described the tempting visions that assailed him when he retreated to the desert to meditate. In this painting, Jerome contemplates a crucifix; his visions are personified as Venus, the goddess of love, accompanied by cupids. Although Venus seems to flee, one of the troublesome cupids still aims his arrow at the saint. The work is unfinished the black-chalk grid, used as aid in enlarging and transferring the preparatory drawing onto the panel, is still visible through the initial thinly applied paint layers.. The Rebuke of Adam and Eve 1740 Charles Joseph Natoire French The history painter Natoire was trained in the studio of François Le Moyne (1688-1737) and this meticulously executed painting must have been intended as a tribute to his teacher. It is a pendant to an earlier work by Le Moyne of the same size and also painted on copper that depicted Adam receiving the forbidden fruit from Eve (private collection). Natoire shared with Le Moyne a predilection for the nude that here links biblical to more sensual subjects popular in eighteenth-century France. The Battle between the Gods and the Giants 1603-1613 Netherlands. The subject of the victory of the gods of Olympus over the ancient race of giants provided Joachim Wtewael with the opportunity to depict exaggerated athletic poses and striking contrasts of space and light. From the clouds, the Olympian gods wield their attributes as weapons Jupiter hurls thunderbolts; Neptune brandishes his triton; and Mercury uses his caduceus as a spear. The helmeted figure on the right is Minerva, the goddess of wisdom and war. The paintingís gemlike effect results from the use of a copper support and from its small scale. Date: 1570s.In this visually opulent and sensual painting, Cupid binds Mars (the god of war) to Venus with a love knot. It celebrates the civilizing and nurturing effects of love, as milk flows from Venus's breast and Mars's warhorse is restrained. By 1621 the painting was owned by Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, along with other mythological works by the artist (two are in the Frick Collection, New York), but its original owner is unknown.
