Allegory of Autumn 1753 François Boucher French By the 1750s, Boucher was associated with a number of signature motifs, perhaps none more so than allegorical putti suspended midair. When given attributes alluding to a season, element, or one of the arts, they provided flexible decorative programs. Frequently Boucher himself participated only minimally in the production of these decorative canvases, allowing his workshop to execute the painting on his behalf. Nonetheless, as here, he sometimes signed such works. While they occur with some frequency in earthenware, only a very few porcelain factories produced these kinds of little paintings’. This depiction is based on a painting by Peter Paul Rubens. It is a spectacular jumble of fighting female warriors (the Amazons) and Greek soldiers under the command of Theseus.

The musical instruments and the mask at Juventasís feet allude to ballet performances and masked ballsóthe favored pastimes of the French courtówhile Saturn holds a floral wreath that features a ballet scene. In the foreground, a variety of winter vegetables are visible, along with a cage, nets, a gun, and game of various kinds the results of a successful hunt.
