According to Greek and Roman mythology, after the Titan Rhea gave birth to Zeus, she hid him from her husband Cronus (also Kronos and had some Curetes, a mythical people, clash their shields to drown out any sign of the baby Zeus' cries. Between 1518 and 1519, the Italian master painter Raphael painted 'The Construction of the Temple' (pictured in this line drawing), Solomon's temple in Jerusalem for what is known as the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. According to the hebrew Bible, Solomon was a king of Israel, son of David. His temple on Mount Moriah housed the Ark of the Covenant.

The Spirit of the Revolution

The figure is from the engraving on the Ficorini Cista that was found at Praeneste, south of Rome, in 1738. It is Roman and dates to about 250 B.C. The design on the Ficorini cista is the sojourn of the Argonauts among the Bebryces. One of the youths is practicing boxing on a leather sack stuffed with sand that hangs from a tree. This exercise was one of the recognized ones in the gymnasium. and continues to be popular with boxers. The book dates to 1895.
