Often based on literary or musical themes, they are distinctive for their loose, spontaneous execution and delicate color harmonies. Here, the goddess of dawn is seated in her cloud-filled palace while Night draws aside her veil, her garments illuminated by the first glittering rays of day. On Death, Part I, 1889. Max Klinger (German, 1857-1920). Etching and aquatint; In On Death, Part One, a series of ten etchings, the Symbolist Max Klinger envisioned the ephemeral nature of life and the suddenness of death, themes that prompted one contemporary critic to call the portfolio a modern "Dance of Death." In Night, the first in the series, a man sits on a bench in an enclosed garden. A moonbeam breaks through the clouds over the sea, and on the path to the right is a lily with a fluttering butterfly. The landscape seems an extension of the figures melancholy thoughts, a landscape of the mind.

Date: ca. 1803.Blake considered the Bible to be the supreme poetic work and here evocatively re-imagined the Old Testament theme of the creation of Eve. Instead of showing the first woman emerging from Adam's side, Blake presents the couple meeting with ceremonial solemnity. A divine figure prepares to join their hands while a recumbent Adam looks up eagerly as his mate steps down from blue-tinged clouds. Objects in the landscape elaborate the meaning: the grape vines entwined around the tree symbolize marriage; the exotic red and blue plumed birds represent the newly created souls; and the giant oak leaf on which Adam reclines forecasts humankind's suffering.
