Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness, c. 1776, Sir Joshua Reynolds, British, 1723-1792, 50 x 40 in. (127.0 x 101.6 cm), Oil on canvas, England, 18th century, Saint John the Baptist was, by all accounts, a rough character, living in the wilderness on locusts and honey. But Italian and Spanish artists of the 1600s often depicted the Biblical figure as an innocent child, and this painting by Joshua Reynolds was inspired by those Old Masters. Yet the playful, almost infantile nature of his Child Baptist is unique. This was part of a group of paintings that Reynolds called his 'fancy pictures,' studies of young children in the style of mythological, allegorical, or religious individuals.

(110.17 x 120.02 x 5.08 cm) (outer frame), Oil on canvas, France, 18th century, The Vestal Virgins were priestesses dedicated to Vesta, the Roman goddess of hearth and home. Their job was to keep the altar fire in their temple continually burning. François Lemoyne depicts a lovely young Vestal looking skyward in pious devotion as she tends the fire. The painting was meant to be installed high above a doorway, which explains the low vantage point and loose handling.

Pleasure ca. 1754 Anton Raphael Mengs German Mengs, born in Bohemia, was for the most part trained in Rome, where he settled in 1751 and lived for much of his life. His contemporaries knew him as a gifted practitioner and theorist of Neoclassicism. Among his most famous works is the Parnassus ceiling in Cardinal Albanis villa in Rome, completed in 1761. During a stay in Dresden, about 1744, he saw pastels by the artist Rosalba Carriera and emulated them, developing a successful practice as a court portraitist. The present work was studied from a model and perfected in accordance with Mengss understanding of classical standards. The figure represents Pleasure and is based upon an iconographical type developed by Cesare Ripa. The coloring is varied, the modeling delicate and softly blended.. Pleasure 438780

Archangel Raphael Unknown. Archangel Raphael, late 17th or early 18th century. Oil on burlap, 32 1/4 x 24 1/8in. (81.9 x 61.3cm). Full-length paintings of archangels based on European prints and medieval Apocryphal sources are recorded in the inventories of Spanish American collectors of various backgrounds. According to the 1797 inventory of the estate of a wealthy Aymara woman, María Angela Cachicatari, the main room of her primary residence in Juli included twenty-five paintings, six of which were of angels.” Images of archangels were displayed high on the walls of elite interiors (see illustration), suggesting that their purpose was more decorative than devotional. This painting on burlap was most likely produced on speculation for a growing art market rather than commissioned. The varied assortment includes figures from the three traditional scenes of a complete Neapolitan presepio: the Nativity, with angels, shepherds, and sheep; the procession of the three Magi, with their colorful retinue of attendants; and the varied and gay crowd of country and town people thronging the tavern, or inn, of Bethlehem the diversorium mentioned by St. Luke, where on the Holy Night there was no place for Mary and Joseph.
