Kadriorg Palace. Tallinn, Estonia. Celing mural which decorates the main hall. It depicts the story of Diana and Actaeon from Ovid's Metamorphoses, a narrative poem written by the Roman poet Publius Ovidius Naso (43 BC-17 AD). The pictorial composition is based on an engraving by the Flemish artist Magdalena van de Passe (1600-1638), which was in turn inspired by a painting by Rembrandt. In Russian court art, the plot of this episode was used as an allegory for Russia's victory in the Great Northern War, where the hunter Actaeon represents the Swedish King Charles XII. Diana, goddess of the hunt, is the personification of victorious Russia. Hunting dogs refer to ancient allies who exchanged sides. First half of the 18th century.
