Mexican American War. The 3,000 Mexican defenders of Vera Cruz surrendered on March 27-28, 1847. General Juan Morales, the original commander of the garrison, turned over command to General Juan Landero, who surrendered his army, and city on March 28. Accepting the sword of Morales, is the US General Winfield Scott, with Commodore David Conner. For the remainder of the war, Vera Cruz was a vital port for the US forces (BSLOC_2019_8_37)

New York City, New York, July 14, 1825The visit of the Marquis de Lafayette to the U.S., in 1824-25, was in every sense a triumphal procession. The 2d Battalion, 11th New York Artillery, was one of the many militia commands turned out in welcome. This unit decided to adopt the title "National Guard," in honor of Lafayette's celebrated Garde Nationale de Paris. The Battalion, later the 7th Regiment, was prominent in the line of march on the occasion of Lafayette's final passage through New York en route home to France. Taking note of the troops named for his old command, Lafayette alighted from his carriage, walked down the line, clasping each officer by the hand as he passed. "National Guard" was destined to become the name of the U.S. militia.

General William Henry Harrison at the Battle of Tippecanoe, Sept. 26, 1811. With 900 soldiers, Harrison marched near Prophetstown, the encampment of Tecumseh's tribe, led by his brother, during Tecumseh absence. This provocative action was met with an attack, and the following Battle of Tippecanoe, on Harrison's camp at dawn, with each side suffering around 150-175 causalities (BSLOC_2019_6_50)

A council was arranged between Shawnee chief Tecumseh and American general and Territorial Governor, William Henry Harrison, July 27, 1811. Tecumseh arrived with 175 well armed warriors, while Harrison was supported by 70 soldiers. Militantly Tecumseh demanded the return of all Indians lands acquired through purchase from individual tribes. When Harrison thought he had been called liar, he reached for this sword, but no real violence followed. Tecumseh argued that no Native Americans can sell 'tribal land' without the consent of all 'tribes'. Since this was not the custom, he deemed all previous land sales to US government were invalid (BSLOC_2019_6_49)
