Black and White Illustration: "The Idle 'Prentice Executed at Tyburn ". Engraving after William Hogarth (1697 - 1764) from his series, "Industry and Idleness". His earlier series of painted works, "The Harlot's Progress" and "Marriage à-la-mode" which were subsequently released as engravings, "Industry and Idleness" was engraved from the outset. Hogarth's aim in this series was to illustrate the possible rewards for working hard, and the pitfalls of not doing so, a message predominantly aimed at working children. This reproduction was by Thomas Cook and originally published around 1806.

In 1812, the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm, published Children and Household Tales, a collection German fairy tales. This illustration accompanied the tale "The Twelve Brothers," which told of a king who planned to kill his 12 sons when a daughter was born. The boys learned of this and fled to the woods Years later, the daughter learned as well and found them in the forest. Here the brothers are reunited with their sister for the first time. This image is from Grimms Eventyr (Grimm's Fairy Tales) by Carl Ewald, published in 1922. The frontispiece has the illustrations by Philip Grot Johann and R. Leinweber. Johann was a well-known German illustrator and did pieces for Goethe, but he considered his pieces for Grimm's tales very important. He died young and Leinweber succeeded him as illustrator for later editions of the tales.

Date: May 22, 1858.Published in the "Illustrated London News," this wood engraving shows British soldiers bidding farewell to family, sweethearts and friends as their ship departs for Calcutta--headed towards the Indian "Mutiny" (or Indian First War of Independence, 1857-1859). Thomas's wood engraving reproduces an 1858 painting (now at Elton Hall) that propelled O'Neil to public prominence--after being shown at the Royal Academy in 1858, the work toured Britain and was seen by over half a million people. After the Civil War, Long Branch became one of the leading playgrounds of the Atlantic seaboard, attracting visitors from the fashionable and theatrical world, although it never enjoyed the exclusivity of Newport or Saratoga. In Homers vivid image, a bevy of windblown, fashionable ingenues, drawn by the white flag announcing calm water, approach the steep wooden staircase that led from the top of the high sand dunes known as the Bluff to the bathhouses on the wide beach below.
