VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - Dara Entekhabi, science team leader at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and other experts discuss the science and engineering of NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive mission, or SMAP, with the audience of a NASA Social held at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. This NASA Social brought together mission scientists and engineers with an audience of 70 students, educators, social media managers, bloggers, photographers and videographers who were selected from a pool of 325 applicants from 45 countries to participate in launch activities and communicate their experience with social media followers. The SMAP mission is scheduled to launch from Vandenberg on Jan. 29.

jsc2019e036696 (June 28, 2019) - Apollo 11 flight director Gene Kranz talks to grand opening visitors in NASA Johnson Space Centers Teague Auditorium. NASAs Johnson Space Center reopened the fully restored Apollo Mission Control Center with a grand opening and ribbon cutting event with NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine on June 28. The room now is reconfigured to its Apollo-era condition. Many of the items in the restored room are original pieces from 1969 that were found or donated, and the missing items were replicated to ensure walking into the viewing room would feel like taking a step back in time. The restoration team used old photographs, footage, documents and interviews and discussions with Apollo veterans to set everything in its proper place, including coffee mugs, clothing articles and ashtrays. Beginning July 1, the Apollo Mission Control Center will become part of daily tours at Johnson hosted by Space Center Houston.

NASA InSight Mars Lander (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) media briefing, Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2018 at NASA Headquarters in Washington. InSIght will land on the Red Planet at approximately 3 p.m. EST (noon PST) Monday, Nov. 26. InSight will study the deep interior of Mars to learn how all celestial bodies with rocky surfaces, including Earth and the Moon, formed. The landers instruments include a seismometer to detect marsquakes and a probe to monitor the flow of heat in the planet's subsurface.

Artemis I managers conduct a Flight Readiness Review (FRR) on Aug. 22, 2022, at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The FRR is an in-depth assessment of the readiness of the agencys Space Launch System and Orion spacecraft to support the uncrewed flight of Artemis I on its mission beyond the Moon and return to Earth. The meeting will conclude later in the day with a poll of all managers. Artemis I is scheduled to launch at 8:33 a.m. EDT on Aug. 29, 2022, from Kennedys Launch Complex 39B. The first in a series of increasingly complex missions, Artemis I will provide a foundation for human deep space exploration and demonstrate our commitment and capability to extend human presence to the Moon and beyond. The primary goal of Artemis I is to thoroughly test the integrated systems before crewed missions by operating the spacecraft in a deep space environment, testing Orions heat shield, and recovering the crew module after reentry, descent, and splashdown.

InSights (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) Principal Investigator W. Bruce Banerdt presents information on the latest findings from InSight to Kennedy Space Center employees on March 13, 2019, at the Florida spaceports Space Station Processing Facility Conference Center. InSight is a NASA Discovery Program mission that placed a single geophysical lander on Mars to study the Red Planets deep interior and will ultimately provide a better understanding of the processes that shaped the rocky planets of the inner solar system, including Earth. The three-astronaut crew of Apollo 17 - commander Eugene Cernan, lunar module pilot Harrison Schmitt, and command module pilot Ronald Evans, embarked on the last mission of the Apollo program to land humans on the Moon in December of 1972. UAP Media Briefing. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson provides remarks during a media briefing to discuss the findings from an unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) independent study team, Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023, at the Mary W. The UAP independent study team, commissioned in 2022, is a counsel of 16 community experts across diverse areas on matters relevant to potential methods of study for unidentified anomalous phenomena. NASA published the teams full report online, which aims to inform about what possible data could be collected in the future to shed light on the nature and origin of UAP.

The presentation focused on NASA's Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport, or InSight, Mars lander. InSight is scheduled for liftoff May 5, 2018, atop a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket from Space Launch Complex 3 at Vandenberg. The spacecraft will be the first mission to look deep beneath the Martian surface studying the planet's interior by measuring its heat output and listen for marsquakes.

NASA and industry leaders speak to NASA Social participants about the agency's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) in the Press Site auditorium at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Speaking to the group is Hans Koenigsmann, vice president of Build and Flight Reliability at SpaceX. TESS is the next step in the search for planets outside of our solar system. The mission will find exoplanets that periodically block part of the light from their host stars, events called transits. The satellite will survey the nearest and brightest stars for two years to search for transiting exoplanets. TESS will launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station no earlier than 6:32 p.m. EDT on Monday, April 16.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Center Director Bill Parsons talks to the media in the NASA News Center Auditorium. He used the occasion to introduce himself and his expectations for the center. Parsons took over the helm of the Kennedy Space Center on Jan. 4 as the ninth director, succeeding James W. Kennedy, who is retiring from the agency. Parsons had served as deputy director under Kennedy during 2006. In 1990, Parsons joined the NASA team at Kennedy Space Center as a launch site support manager in the Shuttle Operations Directorate. He also worked as an executive management intern and later as the shuttle flow director of the Shuttle Operations Directorate at Kennedy. In 1996, he became manager of the Space Station Hardware Integration Office at Kennedy.
