CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - The antenna field for NASA Kennedy Space Centers Doppler radar wind profiler is seen in this aerial photo. Located near the spaceports Shuttle Landing Facility runway, the profiler is being upgraded to a new, state-of-the-art version that will help forecasters and launch teams characterize upper-level winds in the area. This profiler will help in the detection of wind-shear conditions during launch.

In this aerial view, The News Center sits beyond a large parking lot, on a hill at the northeastern end of the Launch Complex 39 Area , next to the turn basin (at left). From left, the grandstand faces the launch pads several miles away on the Atlantic seashore; behind it, the television studio is the site of media conferences; next, the large white-roofed building is the hub of information and activity for press representatives. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - This aerial view of the Press Site shows the NASA TV studio (foreground), the NASA News Center behind it, buildings used by local NBC and CBS television stations, and newly erected prefabricated buildings for local newspapers and correspondents for CNN, AP and others. A year-long project removed and replaced hurricane-damaged trailers and grandstands from the site.

Looking east in this aerial photo can be seen several facilities at KSC. On the left is the parking tarmac next to the runway at the Shuttle Landing Facility. Astronaut Rd. runs from it toward the upper right corner, connecting with Kennedy Parkway North. The white building, upper right) is the Apollo/Saturn V Center. At the center of the photo is the remote launch vehicle (RLV) hangar, still under construction, at the south end of the Shuttle Landing Facility. Next to the multi-purpose RLV hangar are facilities for related ground support equipment and administrative/technical support. At the bottom of the photo is the tow-way road which connects the runway with the Orbiter Processing Facility.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- At Launch Pad 39B at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida, nearly all of the crawler track panels on the pads surface have been removed. The concrete surface beneath the panels and the catacomb roof below will be inspected for water damage and repaired. There are 176 panels, each weighing about 30,000 pounds that will be removed. Launch Pad 39B is being refurbished to support NASAs Space Launch System and other launch vehicles. The Ground Systems Development and Operations, or GSDO, Program office at Kennedy is leading the centers transformation to safely handle a variety of rockets and spacecraft.

In this view looking northwest over the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), the Shuttle Orbiter Enterprise is seen heading South on Rideout Road near the Redstone Arsenal Fire Station as it is being transported to MSFC's building 4755 for later Mated Vertical Ground Vibration tests (MVGVT) at MSFC's Dynamic Test Stand. The tests marked the first time ever that the entire shuttle complement (including Orbiter, external tank, and solid rocket boosters) were mated vertically.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, space shuttle Discovery nears Orbiter Processing Facility-1 (OPF-1). Discovery, which temporarily was being stored in the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), is swapping places with Endeavour, which has been undergoing decommissioning in OPF-1. The shuttles stopped briefly outside OPF-3 for a unique "nose-to-nose" photo opportunity. The image was taken from the top of the VAB. In OPF-1, Discovery will undergo further preparations for public display at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia. Endeavour will be stored in the VAB until October when it will be moved into OPF-2 for further work to get it ready for public display at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.

Progress on the new brick walls of the north side of the flame trench at Launch Pad 39B is seen in a view from the top of the pad at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Pad B flame trench is being refurbished to support the launch of NASAs Space Launch System rocket. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, construction crews lay sand, reinforcing steel and large wooden mats under the rotating service structure (RSS) of Launch Pad 39B to protect the structure's concrete from falling debris during deconstruction. Starting in 2009, the structure at the pad was no longer needed for NASA's Space Shuttle Program, so it is being restructured for future use. The new design will feature a "clean pad" for rockets to come with their own launcher, making it more versatile for a number of vehicles.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - An aerial view of a mobile launcher platform that is parked in the Launch Complex 39 Area at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The platform, which is a moveable base for the launch of space shuttle, is a two-story steel structure 25 feet high, 160 feet long and 135 feet wide. It is constructed of welded steel up to 6 inches thick. The platform rests on six 22-foot-tall pedestals.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Modifications continue on the Multi-Payload Processing Facility, or MPPF, at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The high bay entrance was recently enlarged and a new door installed. New siding is being installed around the entrance.Kennedy's Center Operations Directorate is overseeing upgrades to the MPPF for the Ground Systems Development and Operations Program. The extensive upgrades and modernizations will support processing of Orion spacecraft for NASA's exploration missions. The 19,647-square-foot building, originally constructed in 1995, primarily will be used for Orion hypergolic fueling, ammonia servicing and high-pressure gas servicing and checkout before being transported to the Vehicle Assembly Building for integration with the Space Launch System.

A heavy load transport truck from Tillett Heavy Hauling in Titusville, Florida, arrives at the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying the second half of the A-level work platforms, A north, for the agencys Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. This is the final platform delivered to Kennedy. The A-level platforms are the topmost platforms for High Bay 3 in the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). The platform will be delivered to the VAB staging area in the west parking lot. The Ground Systems Development and Operations Program is overseeing upgrades and modifications to High Bay 3 to support processing of the SLS and Orion spacecraft. A total of 10 levels of new platforms, 20 platform halves altogether, will surround the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft and provide access for testing and processing.

A new elevator has been constructed on the surface of the pad and the crawlerway leading up to the surface is being repaired. Repairs also are being made to the crawler track panels and catacomb roof below on either side of the flame trench.
