KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - At NASAs Kennedy Space Center, the 2004 class of astronaut candidates tour the Space Station Processing Facility (SSPF). CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - In In the News Center at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Bob Bagdigian (right) talks to the media about the Water Recovery System being delivered to the International Space Station on space shuttle Endeavour's STS-126 mission. Bagdigian is a project manager with NASA's Regenerative Environmental Control and Life Support System at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. Behind Bagdigian is a mockup of the two racks that will be used. The two units of the Water Recovery System are designed to provide drinking-quality water through the reclamation of wastewater, including urine and hygiene wastes. The water thats produced will be used to support the crew and work aboard the station. STS-126 is the 124th space shuttle flight and the 27th flight to the International Space Station. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Apollo astronauts and their families tour one of the remodeled firing rooms in the Launch Control Center at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The facility's firing rooms were used to conduct the Saturn V countdowns during the Apollo Program. NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, at left, accompanied the astronauts on the tour which followed a ceremony renaming the refurbished Operations and Checkout Building for Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first person to set foot on the moon. Former astronaut Jim Lovell, a member of the Apollo 8 and Apollo 13 crews, is at center.The ceremony was part of NASA's 45th anniversary celebration of the Apollo 11 moon landing. As the world watched, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed in the moon's Sea of Tranquility on July 20, 1969, aboard the lunar module Eagle. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- At left, STS-120 Pilot George Zamka and Commander Pamela Melroy are greeted by NASA and Kennedy VIPs after completing their successful mission. Melroy and the Discovery crew completed the 15-day mission STS-120, with an on-time landing at 1:01:16 p.m. Wheel stop was at 1:02:07 p.m. Mission elapsed time was 15 days, 2 hours, 24 minutes and 2 seconds. Mission STS-120 continued the construction of the station with the installation of the Harmony Node 2 module and the relocation of the P6 truss.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- After the successful launch of space shuttle Discovery on its STS-124 mission, NASA Administrator Mike Griffin (right) congratulates the team in the firing room at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. Second from left is NASA Flow Director Stephanie Stilson; next to Griffin is Shuttle Launch Director Mike Leinbach. Launch was on time at 5:02 p.m. EDT. Discovery is making its 35th flight. The STS-124 mission is the 26th in the assembly of the space station. It is the second of three flights launching components to complete the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Kibo laboratory. The shuttle crew will install Kibo's large Japanese Pressurized Module and its remote manipulator system, or RMS. The 14-day flight includes three spacewalks.

On August 15, 2018 NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine visited Marshall Space Flight Center. Upon his arrival he was greeted by MSFC Acting Director Jody Singer along with the senior management team. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine addresses the media about the progress of the Space Launch System development and testing during a question-and-answer session in front of the SLS intertank test article at Marshall. SLS, which is managed by Marshall, will enable a new era of exploration beyond Earth's orbit by launching astronauts on missions to deep space destinations including the Moon and Mars.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- A group of The Chiefs of Diplomatic Missions from more than 45 countries tour the Space Station Processing Facility, looking over the various elements intended to be flown to the space station. The visit, one of the largest tours undertaken by the diplomatic corps, is part of the State Department's new Experience America program. The international dignitaries were provided an overview of the United States' space exploration programs and NASA's international cooperation in pursuit of exploration and scientific discovery. They visited various locations at Kennedy, including the Space Station Processing Facility and Launch Pad 39A where space shuttle Atlantis is being prepared for its upcoming mission to the International Space Station.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Dr. Phil Metzger, at right, a principal investigator in the Surface Systems Office, discusses some of NASA's cutting-edge projects with media representatives touring the Granular Mechanics and Regolith Operations, or GMRO, Lab in the Swamp Works at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The GMRO team develops robotics to excavate regolith and ice as resources and to prepare berms, roads and landing pads. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - In the Space Station Processing Facility, STS-116 Pilot William Oefelein (left), Mission Specialists Robert Curbeam (center) and Christer Fuglesang (right) check out equipment for the mission during a Crew Equipment Interface Test activity. Mission STS-116 is the 19th assembly flight to the International Space Station, delivering the third port truss segment, the P5 Truss, that will be attached to the second port truss segment, the P3/P4 Truss. The mission will also deliver the eighth expedition crew to the ISS and return Expedition 7. STS-116 is scheduled for launch July 24, 2003.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Veterans of the space program enjoy a guided tour of the Kennedy Space Center following a ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of Project Gemini. More than 50 former Gemini workers attended the event. Astronaut John Young, himself a veteran of Project Gemini, was the key speaker, telling members of the group they should be pleased with their accomplishments, which ultimately helped to land a man on the moon and will lead to future Mars exploration.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Managers check out the heat shield tiles that protected space shuttle Endeavour on its successful trip home to the Shuttle Landing Facility's Runway 15 at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Endeavour's final return from space completed the 16-day, 6.5-million-mile STS-134 mission. Main gear touchdown was at 2:34:51 a.m. EDT, followed by nose gear touchdown at 2:35:04 a.m., and wheelstop at 2:35:36 a.m.STS-134 delivered the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-2 (AMS) and the Express Logistics Carrier-3 (ELC-3) to the International Space Station. AMS will help researchers understand the origin of the universe and search for evidence of dark matter, strange matter and antimatter from the station. ELC-3 carried spare parts that will sustain station operations once the shuttles are retired from service. STS-134 was the 25th and final flight for Endeavour, which spent 299 days in space, orbited Earth 4,671 times and traveled 122,883,151 miles.

During the tour of the OPF, reporters saw work in progress on Discovery, including reinstallation of the Reinforced Carbon-Carbon panels on the Shuttle's wing leading edge, wiring inspections and instrumentation updates being completed for Return to Flight.

Speaking to the media is Greg Gaddis, the Kennedy Morpheus and ALHAT site manager. Morpheus successfully completed its third free flight test Jan. 16. The 57-second test began at 1:15 p.m. EST with the Morpheus lander launching from the ground over a flame trench and ascending about 187 feet, nearly doubling the target ascent velocity from the last test in December 2013. The lander flew forward, covering about 154 feet in 20 seconds before descending and landing within 11 inches of its target on a dedicated pad inside the autonomous landing and hazard avoidance technology, or ALHAT, hazard field. Individuals in attendance who had a hand in the development or servicing of the Hubble Space Telescope pose for a group photo at an event unveiling a new exhibit featuring Hubble's Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement (COSTAR) and the WFPC2 on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- During a tour of the Radiological Control Center (RADCC) at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, members of the media listen as Ryan Bechtel of the U.S. Department of Energy explains safety equipment and procedures for the upcoming launch of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission.The MSL spacecraft includes a multi-mission radioisotope thermoelectric generator (MMRTG) that will generate the power needed for the mission from the natural decay of plutonium-238, a non-weapons-grade form of the radioisotope. MSL's components include a car-sized rover, Curiosity, which has 10 science instruments designed to search for signs of life, including methane, and help determine if the gas is from a biological or geological source. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Media representatives participate in a Now and Future Tour at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Here, they make a stop in Orbiter Processing Facility-2 (OPF-2) to learn about how shuttle Discovery is being prepared for future public display at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va. Leading the OPF-2 tour is Discovery's NASA Flow Director Stephanie Stilson. Other stops along the tour included Launch Pad 39B and the Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF). Pad B is being restructured for future use. Its new design will feature a "clean pad" for rockets to come with their own launcher, making it more versatile for a number of vehicles. The SLF's runway could be used for private companies and government agencies to host a diversity of launch systems, including orbital and suborbital flights.

Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. -- NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden sees firsthand how Kennedy Space Center is transitioning to a spaceport of the future as Kennedy's Mike Parrish explains the upcoming use of the crawler-transporter, which has carried space vehicles to the launch pad since the Apollo Program. NASA is working with U.S. industry partners to develop commercial spaceflight capabilities to low Earth orbit as the agency also is developing the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle MPCV and the Space Launch System SLS, a crew capsule and heavy-lift rocket to provide an entirely new capability for human exploration. Designed to be flexible for launching spacecraft for crew and cargo missions, SLS and Orion MPCV will expand human presence beyond low Earth orbit and enable new missions of exploration across the solar system.

Guests observe areas of the newly opened Apollo 1 tribute at the Apollo/Saturn V Center at NASA's Kennedy Space Center opened Jan. 27, 2017. Astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White II and Chaffee perished in a fire at the launch pad on Jan. 27, 1967, during training for the mission. The tribute highlights the lives and careers of the astronauts. The tribute features numerous items recalling the lives of the three astronauts. The tribute also includes the three-part hatch to the spacecraft itself, the first time any part of the Apollo 1 spacecraft has been displayed publicly. A version of the hatch after it was redesigned is also showcased as an example of improvements NASA made throughout the agency and to the Apollo spacecraft that would later carry astronauts to the moon.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- At NASA Kennedy Space Center's Apollo/Saturn V Center, Kennedy Center Director Bob Cabana speaks to university students at the award ceremony for NASA's second annual Lunabotics Mining Competition.Thirty-six teams of undergraduate and graduate students from the United States, Bangladesh, Canada, Colombia and India participated in NASA's Lunabotics Mining Competition May 26 - 28 at the agency's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The competition is designed to engage and retain students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Teams will maneuver their remote controlled or autonomous excavators, called lunabots, in about 60 tons of ultra-fine simulated lunar soil, called BP-1. The competition is an Exploration Systems Mission Directorate project managed by Kennedy's Education Division. The event also provides a competitive environment that could result in innovative ideas and solutions for NASA's future excavation of the moon.

The goal of the STP Program is to understand the fundamental physical processes of the space environment from the sun to Earth, other planets, and the extremes of the solar system boundary.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - In the Firing Room at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Shuttle Launch Director Mike Leinbach performs the traditional tie-cutting of the inaugural launch for STS-127 Shuttle Launch Director Pete Nickolenko . Liftoff of space shuttle Endeavour on the STS-127 mission was on-time at 6:03 p.m. EDT. Today was the sixth launch attempt for the STS-127 mission. The launch was scrubbed on June 13 and June 17 when a hydrogen gas leak occurred during tanking due to a misaligned Ground Umbilical Carrier Plate. The mission was postponed July 11, 12 and 13 due to weather conditions near the Shuttle Landing Facility at Kennedy that violated rules for launching, and lightning issues. Endeavour will deliver the Japanese Experiment Module's Exposed Facility and the Experiment Logistics Module-Exposed Section in the final of three flights dedicated to the assembly of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Kibo laboratory complex on the International Space Station.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - The media visit the operations center on board the Freedom Star, one of the Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) retrieval ships. The stop was part of a day-long event that featured the movement of the first SRB segments to the Vehicle Assembly Building for stacking for Return to Flight mission STS-114. Two SRBs support the liftoff of the Space Shuttle on a launch. The twin 149-foot tall, 12-foot diameter SRBs provide the main propulsion system during launch to place the orbiters in the proper orbit around the Earth. They operate parallel with the Space Shuttle main engines for the first two minutes of flight and jettison away from the orbiter, with help from the Booster Separation Motors, about 26.3 nautical miles above the Earths surface.
