The Adoration of the Magi. This painting zooms in’ on the adoration of the magi to such an extent that, as a spectator, you feel almost present at the birth. The kings bring gifts for baby Jesus, who is not in a lowly stable, but in the ruins of a palace - that of King David, where, according to legend, Jesus was born many centuries later.

(68.3 x 73.3 cm); painted surface 26 3/8 x 28 3/8 in. (67 x 72.1 cm). Date: early 1480s.The picture's harmonious composition was adapted from a large, celebrated altarpiece Hans Memling completed in 1479 for the Sint-Janshospitaal in Bruges. This smaller, more modest version was commissioned by an anonymous donor who kneels at the left. He is shown reciting his rosary as he contemplates Saint Catherine's mystic marriage to the infant Jesus. Saint Barbara, whose attribute--the tower--is behind her, sets a meditative example by reading. The grape arbor above the Virgin's throne and canopy was most likely added shortly after Memling's lifetime, in the early sixteenth century, when the cult of the Eucharist became increasingly popular. The Annunciation 1480-89 Hans Memling Netherlandish Memling modeled this Annunciation on the left wing of Rogier van der Weydens Saint Columba Altarpiece (now in Munich), but his innovative rendition portrays the Virgin swooning and supported by two angels, rather than kneeling. Like other fifteenth-century Flemish painters working in the wake of Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling cloaked religious imagery in the pictorial language of everyday life, paying close attention to naturalistic detail. This Annunciation takes place in a comfortably appointed bedchamber, though many of the domestic furnishings have symbolic connotations. The carafe of water, through which light passes uncorrupted, and the vase of lilies are symbols of the Virgin's purity, while the empty candleholder signifies her imminent role as bearer of Christ, light of the world. The Holy Family possibly 1527-33 Workshop of Joos van Cleve Netherlandish Joos van Cleve (Netherlandish, Cleve ca. 1485-1540/41 Antwerp) and his workshop were prolific in their creation of depictions of the Holy Family. Of the many versions of this subject produced by the master and his studio, the Lehman picture can be placed within a smaller subgroup featuring a landscape view behind Saint Joseph as well as an upright Christ Child. The Joos van Cleve workshop and their followers included subtle - and sometimes more dramatic - variations on this popular scene, other examples of which can be seen in the Mets collection (Friedsam collection, 32.100.57 and Linsky collection, 1982.60.47). Intended as a model of Christian domestic life, the Virgin and Child with Saint Joseph reflects the increasing emphasis on Josephs role in the early life of Jesus.. The Holy Family 459059
