Acheulean Suitable for a variety of tasks, including digging, chopping, and butchering, Paleolithic hand axes are the earliest and longest-used kind of tool made by diverse species of hominids, with documented usage over a period of 1.7 million years. These nine examples, which were all discovered within a small geographic area in Aisne, France, are remarkable for their variety and the high quality of their workmanship. They are a potent manifestation of an early and continuous human interest in perfection of form, and aesthetics in general, as demonstrated by their makers' efforts to endow them with symmetrical faces and edges, well beyond practical requirements. The largest bifaces in this group are so substantial that they would have been of little to no use as tools. Although their specific functions remain a matter of speculation, it is clear that they must have been prized for their appearance rather than utility.. Biface. In ancient Rome, there was a high demand for colorful glass that could dazzle banquet guests alongside the expensive silver and gold serving wares meant to impress. Fragments like this one would have once been a part of larger mosaic dishes. The mosaic pattern was made by sagging molten glass into bowl-shaped molds, a technique used on many of these fragments is similar to millefiori, ìthousand flowersî in Italian, a modern glass-making method in which tiny rods of colored glass are bundled together, wrapped in a sheet of glass, fused, and then thinly sliced to reveal swirls of a flower-like patterns. They were arranged side by side, sometimes together with bits of colored glass, and fused together with heat.. Glass, mosaic glass technique . Ancient RomanSerrated flint knife. Neolithic period. Third Intermediate Period Nany bore the titles Mistress of the House, Chantress of Amun-Re, and Kings Daughter of his body. She was most likely the child of the High Priest of Amun, Painedjem I (ca. 1050 B.C.), who was de facto ruler of the Theban area in the early 21st Dynasty. Like many of the members of her family, she was buried at Deir el-Bahri, in an earlier tomb used by a consort of the New Kingdom pharaoh Amenhotep II (died ca. 1400 B.C.), Meritamun. In her seventies at the time of her death, she was short and fat, but retained some of her teeth and most of her hair. Most of her tomb furniture had originally been made for her mother, a Mistress of the House and Chantress of Amen-Re named Tentabekhenet. This floral collar, made of persea leaves and lotus petals sewn with a double running stich over thin strips of palm leaf, was found over the left breast of her wrapped mummy..
