When Tissot first debuted his series in Paris in 1894, he preceded the earliest narrative scenes with this mysterious image of Jesus peering through a delicate screen. The artist provided the following verse from the Song of Solomon to accompany this unusual composition: Behold, he [the beloved standeth behind our wall, he looketh forth at the windows, showing himself through the lattice.” As scholars have noted, the vines heavy with fruit and the sunflowers—traditional Christian symbols—sprout before or climb the thick stone wall. While the grapes evoke the rite of Communion, the bright yellow flowers, which grow toward the sun, suggest Christ’s followers, who turn faithfully to him. This image of

Schloss Milkel in Moonlight ca. 1833-35 Carl Gustav Carus The Baroque manor house at Milkel, near Dresden, is depicted from its rear garden in an atmosphere of deep calm. While natures fecundity is illuminated by the moon, two windows glow softly, revealing a human presence—the sign of someone awake late at night. Carus wrote that "supreme reality is manifest both inwardly, through the rational mind, and outwardly, through nature," a duality represented in this painting by lamplight and moonlight.. San Gimignano. Artist: Elihu Vedder (American, New York 1836-1923 Rome). Dimensions: 13 7/8 x 10 3/4 in. (35.2 x 27.3 cm).While studying in Paris in the late 1850s, Vedder became disappointed with French academicism and decided to travel to Italy to study the work of the Italian masters. In Florence, he frequented the Caffè Michelangelo, where he met a group of young, predominantly Tuscan painters known as the Macchiaioli, who eschewed the formalism of the Accademia in favor of a more spontaneous, plein-air style inspired by nature. Vedder's view of San Gimignano, a picturesque medieval hill town in Tuscany noted for its high bell towers, or campanili, reflects his association with the Macchiaioli and his enduring appreciation for the landscape of Italy, where he settled in the 1860s for the rest of his life.
