Trout Pond. Artist: Franz von Stuck (German, Tettenweis 1863-1928 Munich). Dimensions: Sheet: 18 1/2 × 13 3/8 in. (47 × 34 cm)Plate: 11 15/16 × 9 15/16 in. (30.4 × 25.2 cm). Date: 1890-1891.Stuck, who typically favored mythological and allegorical subjects, turned to depicting the landscape while visiting the artist colony of Osternberg in the early 1890s. He made this dense, dark etching after a painting of the same title. The stillness of the twilit scene is interrupted only by the concentric ripples on the glistening surface of the water, barely disturbing the reflection of the row of trees along the edge of the pond. The print was later published in the Munich-based art journal Jugend, the namesake of the German iteration of Art Nouveau. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Swan and Iris (Sketch after Cecil Lawson's "Swan and Iris") 1883 James McNeill Whistler American Whistler's etching is based on an unfinished painting by the British landscapist Lawson, a member of the Idyllists. The tranquil riverscape is composed of a flowering iris in the foreground, and a swan with outstretched wings moving across an expanse of water, perhaps the River Thames, towards a bank in the middle distance. The composition is framed by the wide span of an arched bridge. The print was commissioned as an illustration for a posthumous biography of Lawson written by Edmund Gosse and published in 1883, a copy of which is in the Museum's collection (17.3.2983).
