On July 3, 1898, the United States Navy won the battle at Santiago in Cuba. It was one of the key battles in the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Spanish fleet was completely destroyed. The flagship of the US Navy was the USS Brooklyn. This painting dates to 1899.

On 9 October 1870, manning the fortifications against the invading Prussians, Rambervillers, Eastern France 1870: 200 national guardsmen held out for a day against 2, 000 Germans. Their courage won the town the Légion d'Honneur medal, and had a street in Paris (in the 12th arrondissement) named after it.

Navy Drive Off Nazi Bombers -- It was reported on Nov. 19th. that ten of Germany's biggest bombers made surprise attack on four British cruisers 70 miles west of Bergen, Norway.The raiders dived repeatedly in the attempt to sink ships and dropped over 100 bombs.Cruisers replied with fierce and extremely accurate anti-aircraft fire crippling at least two of the German planes and making it impossible for the remainder to continue the fight. They fled into the clouds without scoring a single hit. November 21, 1939.

Battle of Port Hudson Published: Boston 1902 print. The Siege of Port Hudson occurred from May 22 to July 9, 1863, when Union Army troops assaulted and then surrounded the Mississippi River town of Port Hudson, Louisiana, during the American Civil War.

A galliass or galleass, part of the Spanish Armarda which sailed against England during the Anglo-Spanish War of 1585-1604. A vessel larger and more heavily built than a galley, and propelled by both sail and oars. They carried 32 oars, eached worked by up to five men. Usually equipped with three masts and a forecastle and aftcastle.

Dutch Harbor, Alaska, June 3, 1942The Japanese realized that in order to win the war in the Pacific, they would have to bring the U.S. fleet into decisive combat. Their plan envisaged a deceptive move in a northern direction, towards the Aleutian Islands and Alaska. It would be a difficult campaign. The climate of the chain of islands that bounds the Bering Sea is not conducive for military operations or bases. It was cold and foggy in the summer, and bitterly cold in the winter. The climate was hard on man and machines. To counter the Japanese threat, the United States planned bases on the Aleutians. Into those bases throughout the first half of 1942, the nation moved her soldiers, sailors and airmen. Arkansas' 206th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft) armed with obsolescent 3" anti-aircraft guns and water-cooled .50 caliber machine guns arrived in Dutch Harbor, the Aleutian Islands as part of the air defense. The Siberian Intervention (ベリア出兵 - Shiberia Shuppei), or the Siberian Expedition of 1918-1922 was the dispatch of troops of the Entente powers to the Russian Maritime Provinces as part of a larger effort by the western powers and Japan to support White Russian forces against the Bolshevik Red Army in the final year of World War I and during the Russian Civil War. The Imperial Japanese Army continued to occupy Siberia even after other Allied forces had withdrawn in 1920.

The Siege of Tsingtao was the attack on the German-controlled port of Tsingtao (now Qingdao) in China during World War I by Imperial Japan and the United Kingdom. It took place between 31 October and 7 November 1914 and was fought by Imperial Japan and the United Kingdom against Germany. It was the first encounter between Japanese and German forces, and also the first Anglo-Japanese operation during the war.
