The Battle of Dunkirk. In 1639 Maerten Harpertsz Tromp prevented the Spanish fleet from leaving the harbour at Dunkirk with a blockade of twelve ships. Van de Velde has depicted most of the Dutch vessels with their prows pointing towards the enemy armada. With a remarkable eye for detail, he rendered in pen the ships counters or transoms - the stern carvings from which the individual vessels can be identified.

The Spanish in Oran's region. During the second third of the 19th century many Spaniards went as farmers to make their fortune in northern Algeria. On June 11, 1881, the men of the Marabout Mohamed el-Arbi, known as Bu-Amena, attacked farmers who were gathering esparto in the Oranian agricultural fields of Khalfalia and Frendah, near Saida (Algeria). The Admiral Mitchell at Boulogne 1853. The ship served under two contracts for the Royal Navy as a hired armed cutter or schooner, one at the end of the French Revolutionary Wars and the second at the beginning of the Napoleonic Wars. She participated in several notable small engagements and actions. In 1806 the Admiralty purchased her and took her into service as the Sir Andrew Mitchell in 1807.
