The Burnside Expedition, also known as Burnside's North Carolina Expedition, was a Union military operation that took place in North Carolina in 1862. The expedition was led by Brigadier General Ambrose E. Burnside and Flag Officer Louis M. Goldsborough, who commanded the naval contingent. The operation was part of Winfield Scott's Anaconda Plan, which aimed to close blockade-running ports in the Outer Banks.

A German illustration depicting their version of events as submarine U 14 is sunk 'treacherously and unsuspectedly'. The illustration shows a British trawler ramming the U boat deliberately, the submarine having already been peppered with shot-holes from the guns apparently in place on the trawler. The incident was reported in Parliament on June 9 by First Lord of the Admiralty Arthur Balfour thus, 'Within the past few days a German submarine has been sunk and of her crew, 6 officers and 21 men

Wreck of HMS Irresistible. HMS Irresistiblethe fourth British Royal Navy ship of the namewas a Formidable-class pre-dreadnought battleship. Commissioned in 1902, she initially served with the Mediterranean Fleet until April 1908, when she was transferred to the Channel Fleet. Following the outbreak of World War I, Irresistible, along with the squadron, was assigned to the Channel Fleet. After operations with the Dover Patrol, during which she bombarded German forces in northern France, she was assigned to the Dardanelles Campaign in February 1915. She took part in numerous unsuccessful attacks on the Ottoman forts guarding the Dardanelles. On 18 March, she struck a naval mine that caused extensive flooding and disabled her engines. The Irresistible was abandoned and eventually sank. Her crew suffered around 150 killed in the sinking

The First Anglo-Chinese War (1839-42), known popularly as the First Opium War or simply the Opium War, was fought between the United Kingdom and the Qing Dynasty of China over their conflicting viewpoints on diplomatic relations, trade, and the administration of justice. Chinese officials wished to stop what was perceived as an outflow of silver and to control the spread of opium, and confiscated supplies of opium from British traders. The British government, although not officially denying China's right to control imports, objected to this seizure and used its newly developed military power to enforce violent redress. In 1842, the Treaty of Nankingthe first of what the Chinese later called the unequal treatiesgranted an indemnity to Britain, the opening of five treaty ports, and the cession of Hong Kong Island, thereby ending the trade monopoly of the Canton System. The failure of the treaty to satisfy British goals of improved trade and diplomatic relations led to the Second Opiu
