Fort Sumter was a fortification situated at the mouth of the harbor in Charleston, South Carolina. The first conflict of the US Civil War took place on April 12, 1861. On April 7, 1863, seven Passaic-class monitors, the experimental double-fixed-turreted USS Keokuk, and the ironclad frigate New Ironsides advanced in column toward Fort Sumter. Their goal was to bombard this linchpin of Charleston's defense into submission while entering the inner harbor to force Charleston's capitulation. It was a battle where ironclads faced fortifications, with the fortifications coming out the victor in this instance by demonstrating the prowess of Confederate gunners and the difficulties of naval bombardment and assault.

Robert Holmes Setting the Dutch Fleet on Fire at Terschelling.During the Second Anglo-Dutch War, the English Rear Admiral Robert Holmes raided the Vlie estuary in August 1666, setting fire to a large Dutch merchant fleet of 150 ships moored between the islands of Vlieland and Terschelling. As part of the same attack - which came to be known as Holmes Bonfire - he sacked and burnt down the village of West-Terschelling, killing mostly women and children.

Jean-François de Galoup, Comte de La Pérouse (August 23, 1741-1788) was a French explorer and naval officer. In 1785, the King of France commissioned La Perouse to head an expedition to explore the Pacific Ocean, to investigate whaling and fur prospects, and to establish French claims in this area. La Pérouse had admired the explorer James Cook, and wanted to continue his work. La Perouse was assigned two 500-ton ships called the Astrolabe and the Boussole. His crew of 114 included sailors, scientists, a physicist, three draftsmen, three naturalists, clergymen, and a mathematician. They left France in August, 1785. La Perouse mapped the west coast of North America in 1786, and visited Easter Island and Hawaii. His ships reached the west coast of Alaska in 1786 and did extensive mapping of the North American west coast from Alaska to Monterey, California. Capture of the Tripoli by the Enterprise c 1806-1812 Philadelphia. At the turn of the 19th century, conflict arose between the United States of America and the North African Barbary State of Tripoli. President Thomas Jefferson refused to continue to pay tribute or ransom to Tripoli to prevent the pirating of American merchant ships sailing in the Mediterranean Sea. Jefferson dispatched the American ship Enterprise to the Tripolitan waters as a sign of resistance just as Tripoli increased its tribute demands and declared war against the United States. Thomas Birch, an early specialist in maritime painting, captured the battle between the Enterprise and a Tripolitan cruiser in the Mediterraneanís dark, violent waters. The Battle of Sinop, or the Battle of Sinope, took place on 30 November 1853 at Sinop, a sea port in northern Anatolia, when Imperial Russian warships commanded by Vice-Admiral Pavel Nakhimov struck and annihilated a patrol force of Ottoman ships anchored in the harbor. The battle was part of the Crimean War, and a contributory factor in bringing France and Britain into the conflict.

The naval Battle of Leghorn (the Dutch call the encounter by the Italian name Livorno) took place on 14 March (4 March Old Style) 1653, during the First Anglo-Dutch War, near Leghorn (Livorno), Italy. It was a victory of a Dutch fleet under Commodore Johan van Galen over an English squadron under Captain Henry Appleton. Afterward an English fleet under Captain Richard Badiley, which Appleton had been trying to reach, came up but was outnumbered and fled. The battle gave the Dutch command of the Mediterranean, placing the English trade with the Levant at their mercy, but Van Galen was mortally wounded, dying on 23 March.

The Battle of Lepanto took place on 7 October 1571 when a fleet of the Holy League, a coalition of Catholic maritime states, decisively defeated the main fleet of the Ottoman Empire in five hours of fighting on the northern edge of the Gulf of Patras, off western Greece. The Ottoman forces sailing westwards from their naval station in Lepanto (Turkish: Inebahti; Greek: apat or pat Naupaktos or Épahtos) met the Holy League forces, which had come from Messina. The Victory of the Holy League prevented the Mediterranean Sea from becoming an uncontested highway for Muslim forces, protected Italy from a major Ottoman invasion, and prevented the Ottomans from advancing further into the southern flank of Europe. Lepanto was the last major naval battle in the Mediterranean fought entirely between galleys, and has been assigned great symbolic importance.
