NEW YORK (Oct. 6, 2012) Sailors assigned to the guided-missile destroyer USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112) salute aboard the ship during its commissioning ceremony. The new destroyer honors the late Lt. (SEAL) Michael P. Murphy, a New York native who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in combat as leader of a four-man reconnaissance team in Afghanistan. Murphy was the first person to be awarded the medal for actions in Afghanistan, and the first member of the U.S. Navy to receive the award since the Vietnam War. The ship will be based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The U.S. Navy has a 237-year heritage of defending freedom and projecting and protecting U.S. interests around the globe. The worlds largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants critical to ensuring to safety of sea lanes and security on the worlds oceans. A chief petty officer and an enlisted crewman from the aircraft carrier USS MIDWAY (CV-41) render hand salutes at the decommissioning ceremony for the 47 years old veteran ship. The only carrier to come close to such lengthy service was the CORAL SEA (CV-43) with just two less years service. The MIDWAY class ships were constructed late in World War II as battle carriers (CVB) with armored flight decks to withstand Kamikaze attacks.
