Heading for a Warm Christmas - Pictured as she left Devonport (Plymouth), her home port, for the Far East is H.M.S. Ocean, a light fleet aircraft carrier. She is making a round trip to take naval personnel for duties in the Mediterranean, East Indies and the Far East Station, returning to the United Kingdom early next year with men from the Far East and East Indies who have completed their normal periods of overseas duties. The carrier - which will end her outward voyage at Hong Kong will probably spend Christmas at Trincomalee, Ceylon.This is 'Ocean's second trip to the Far East this year. December 01, 1949. Navy's Newest Plane Carrier Starts on Shakedown Trials Quincy, Mass -- The United State Navy's Newest airplane carrier, The $21,000,000 U.S.S. Wasp, passed under a drawbridge here, Dec. 18th. As she starts out from the Bethlehem Steel Company's fore river yards on her first builder's shakedown cruise. Parts of her decks were shrouded with Tarpaulins to protect secret Equipment from prying eyes. The Wasp is eighteen months behind schedule, her construction Having been delayed to allow time to Install machinery and Equipment perfected during her building. She was launched last April. The Sirius is armed with a 3.7 cm cannon and according to a scheme from 1937 that should be used as a ship without permission the new waterway would run out.
