A U.S. Coast Guard infantry Landing craft still flies its flag, though knocked out of the invasion, ripped and wounded on the beaches of France. Moving in for a landing, the LCI ran afoul of an underwater construction, which tore a gaping hole in her bow. Then as its cargo of troops piled ashore, Nazi shells tattered her out of further action.

Winter and summer, storm or calm, the United States Coast Guard Buoy Tenders Service the vital channel sentinels that light a safe passage for ships plying American coastal waters. Here a Coast Guard tender hoists a buoy over the side somewhere in the Atlantic. The crew will paint it, fuel it and check it for adjustments or repairs.

The Royal Gate, or Ngo Mon, is one of the main gates to the Forbidden City in Hue. Between 1802 and 1945, Hue was the imperial capital of the feudal Nguyen Dynasty, which dominated much of southern Vietnam. In 1802, Nguyen Phuc Anh (later Emperor Gia Long) succeeded in establishing his control over the whole of Vietnam, thereby making Hue the national capital. The French administration placed the boy emperor Duy Tan on the throne in 1907, replacing his father Emperor Thanh Thai who was opposed to French colonial rule and sent into exile. Hue remained the Vietnamese capital until 1945, when Emperor Bao Dai abdicated and a communist government was established in Hanoi.
