The journey went VA Brest, Gibraltar, Livorno, La Spezia, Lerici, La Specia, Gibraltar, Falmouth, Plymouth and Portland back to Den Helder. Alexandria Coast Guard Officer Is Presented Bronze Star Medal. Coast Guard Lieut. Henry K. Rigg (center) is presented the Bronze Star Medal by Coast Guard Commander A. C. Unger, Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard LCI Flotilla in European invasion operations. Lieutenant Rigg received the award for "meritorious performance of duty as Commanding officer of the LCI (L)88 during the assault on the beaches of Normandy." On D-Day, his ship made successful landings under terrific enemy fire. The citation was by Admiral Harold R. Stark, USN, Commander of the U.S. Naval Forces in Europe. Lieutenant Rigg is a native of New Castle, Dela. and his home is in Alexandria, Va. Before the war, he was well known as a yachtman and writer for the New Yorker.

Marine Inspection. A U.S. Coast Guard inspector (left) observes as the captain of a United States ocean liner docked at New York Harbor check the life jackets of his crew at their boat stations during an emergency drill. During a drill an inspector may question the crew on the duties assigned them. Lives might depend on every man's knowing his exact duties and stations. In addition to carrying life jackets for the crew, passenger vessels must carry in easily accessible places Coast Guard approved life jackets for every man, women and child that will travel abroad. Coast Guard inspections about every three months aboard passenger ships verify that safety standards set up by national law and the 1948 International Convention of Safety of Life at Sea are being maintained.
